I removed the rear drive shaft from the rear differential it came out in pieces the 4 ball bearings came out of the CV joint cage. I did not expect this to happen is this normal or is the drive shaft/differential broken. I have searched but I'm unable to find any information on this thank you in advance for information on this.

I had the same problem y with my driveshaft when I took it off my trans. So my crafty ass took the CV off the driveshaft. Bad move. So then I put all the balls back it, took me a good hour to figure out how it went. Packed it with grease put it back on the car and got the worst vibration ever. Which was the problem in the first place. So it needs to be replaced. You can buy them new on 034.

I've been looking at drive line parts on ECS(don't want to buy many of those parts) and they sell a CV joint for the drive shaft that's only $90 not to bad. It comes with the snap ring that you spoke about. I removed the bolts holding the cap over the CV joint. When I finally got my drive shaft to separate from the differential the drive shaft had the splined head and ball bearing cage attached to the end of the drive shaft and the ball bearings fell out of the bearing cage. I think that the outside case for the CV joint is still attached to the rear differential so what holds that onto the differential.
