Purpose is that it retains the heat emitted by the turbo to the turbo unit.
For a turbo, heat = energy, energy = HP. If you keep more of the heat into the turbo then it will perform better. (obviously to a point).
It also prevents radiant heat from spreading in the engine bay which reduces heat soak.

since my car is only chipped I haven't invested into a turbo blanket but it can definitely help with under hood temps and with heat control

Forgive me for being dumb here I am a little hung over, how does heat in a turbo transfer to energy? I feel like this blanket would retain the heat, but I'd be too afraid of it damaging the turbo. I think on our cars it'd be better to wrap the intake tract.

it will help move the heat through the exhaust. it helps with efficiency on the turbo.

    1. Keeps the hot side hot, hotter gasses flow faster

    2. keeps the cold side cold, intake air temps are reduced

    3. looks dope AF

Whatever the power benefits, I can't see it being good for the turbo's health. Every trubo motor made runs cooling water through the turbo. I can't imagine those engineers are wrong and that more heat won't be bad for it.

Not all turbos are water cooled. Some are only oil cooled. The purpose of the blanket is to keep the heat in the exhaust housing, not the CHRA. The CHRA temps should be mostly unchanged because of all the coolant that runs through it.

How 'bout when you turn it off? Won't the blanket just make the heat soak worse?

That's why you don't beat on your car and then immediately shut it off. If you give your car a minute or two to cool down after running it hard, you'll be fine. Just drive normally the last mile or two before getting where you are going.

What if some little boy in a jacked up pick-up cuts me off right before I get off the freeway? Aren't I obliged to downshift and wind it out hard to give him a little tutorial in Teutonic turbo power?

Just let it idle for a little bit before shutting it off then.

Seems like there's better things to spend your money on. Jhm has a short shifter sale right now.

I'm not saying its worth the money. I'm just saying that adding a turbo blanket isn't going to hurt anything.

If you're gonna spend the money just do a universal kit, wont look as nice, but it will do the exact same thing for cheaper...

Don't worry I'm not going to blow 250$ on this. Thought it be nice showing some new go fast options out there no ones tried yet. If i do it it would be a universal crushed volcanic rock setup, probably DEI's. My downpipe has been wrapped for 6+ years now with no issues, looks/works great. I don't recommend using anything besides the high quality material kits. There's burnt down subarus all over the internet from using the cheap ebay space suit looking ones.

Get one of those blankets people use after a race.
It will do the same thing as this $250 blanket. If you want better heat retention, then stack it up and make a multi layer blanket. How hot does the turbo get? My concern would be the working temperature of mylar.

Its not really about spending more, but having the right thermal properties for its usage.

Definitely want something with a low emittance on the surface facing in and low emittance facing out. This way the heat generated from the turbo will be reflected back and heat from conductance will be minimized to the engine environment.
Probably want rockwool as the insulation to keep the conductance low.
