Looking for opinions a built 1.8

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello everyone. Lately I've been spending a lot of time looking into performance upgrades. And stumbled across a gem on kijiji. I'm looking to see what information the forum can provide on these build specs and what your thoughts are.

I've found a newly built 1.8t AMB engine for sale. Specs as I know,

    JE pistons (8.5:1 81.5mm bore)
    Corilla connecting rods
Factory crankshaft (0.001 oversize main and rods)
Kings racing main and journal bearings
    Aeb head (cleaned, rebuilt, seated)
All new (oil pump, chains, hardware etc)
    Apr headstuds
    Headgasket set.

This is a new rebuild. Has not been installed or run yet. Engine and head are dissassembled. Seller has the paperwork from the machine shop. Asking price is $4500.

The seller also has some supporting hardware. Claims to have over $13500 invested.

    GT2876R
    Fmic with piping
    880cc injectors

What do my fellow b6ers think of this setup/price/value. Hes asking $4500 for the engine alone and add everything else on top. I have not heard much of corilla rods. I also have not read much about the 2876r.

Help me out here. Making a 3 hour drive to take a look at it this weekend.

I'm believe the head has not been installed. The bottom end was installed at the machine shop.

    Carillo Rods are $750
    JE Pistons are $550
A 1.8 block with aeb may be had for let's say $3-500?
    Machining head and block $400-600
    Accessories $500

I mean if it's an assembled engine you're getting it about what it would cost in my eyes. Those are all good expensive parts. Depends on your power goals because you can make a block that will handle 450-500hp for a lot less, but if you wanna go big this would be the way to do it. Although at that point I would just do a 2.0 stroker.

I would also ask who did the machine work for the rebuild to make sure they're reputable.

I understand your point. I'm also located in Canada. And with lots of these parts being hard to find locally, and the terrible conversion rate at the moment, I feel like building myself would be comparable/more expensive.

I'd say it's a safe purchase. If you could talk him down a bit it would be even better but I don't think that it's overpriced for what you're getting. Maybe see if he will give you a package deal with the turbo and intercooler.

That's what I was thinking. From what I'm reading this 2876r is not a good match for the 1.8. But I might be interested in the injectors and fmic.

A place between here and there

You can get built cars that actually run for a little more than his asking price, which is basically the "on top" prices for said turbo kit. So essentially, what he is sellong and then a free car included. Sounds silly, but numbers are about the same.

Issue with unran (if that is even a word) built engines is anything can happen. Initially, couple miles into, couple hundred, or a couple thousand. Risky gamble if you don't get details (ie warranty on block). But with the price of the block alone, adding costs to that to actually have it run is a different story. Stock ecu won't like those engine specs too much and the car will run like poop.
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch

His asking price is kind of high, but obviously i would try to negotiate. Or add some of his other items to the deal. The car is already tuned, I would do this properly. This could be the beginning of a BT build. Not liking the sounds of the 2876r. But I feel this motor should be able to handle a 3071r comfortably. Im comfortable with expecting additional costs to actually get this in the car.

Just checked some on some prices... Came out close to $3000 not including machine work. You think the warranty would transfer owners w/ the proper paperwork or procedure?

Well I bought the bullet and took the risk. It's pretty evident this block was professionally machined and assembled. Had the machine shop bill to go along with it. Buyer was negotiable and i got a pretty good price. Let the fun begin.

Sweet! Good luck with the project. What turbo are you going to go with?

I tried to do a bit of research before looking at this engine. There's so many options avaliable... log or tubular manifold? Gtx? Efr? Once I get on my feet a bit I might start a build thread. Try and get some discussion.
