Charging System Failure/ No Power Steering

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello and Good Morning,

Yesterday after work as I was about to pull into my garage I got the "charging system failure" light on the dash. I turned the car off and started it again and there was no issue. But they when I turned the wheel my power steering wasnt working. My 2010 S4 DSG has 99800 miles on it (I must be one of the high mileage members) and havent had any issues up til now.

Curious if anyone else has dealt with this, Seeing as how its charging system and lack of power steering (I have hydraulic) leads me to believe it must be an issue with the accessories belt or tensioner.

I will let you know when I have more information, and will add photos, but I hope to see if anyone else had seen this.

    Thanks!

    EDIT****

Crank pulley seperated. Im not interested in a $400.00 Al replacement, so I modelled my own and am waiting on a quote :)

Is your battery still original from 2010?

Bet your crank pulley failed. It will cause the belts not to spin. Upgrade to a JHM one.

You can push and pull the pulley forward to verify it.

Yes the battery is the original. Ill look for separation on the crank pulley. Thanks for the tip!

You were right infinkc. Got the car in service mode and pulled off the serp belt and the crank pulley is separated and the outer part free spins. I'm just glad the belt didn't explode. I'm a bit peeved jhm's pulley is $400.00 plus.... I'm an engineer by trade and the r&d for one of these is pretty minimal. I think I'll make my own model and have it cnc'd at work for much less. Titanium crank pulley anyone? ;) lol

400 is not bad for theirs if you consider the oem one is the same price. You might msg s4matty to see if he will send you his cad files.

There are cases where an aluminum aftermarket crank pulley (for the 2.0 TSI) would wear at the point where the seal rides, and the engine developed an oil leak.

Also, there is a thread in the S4 forum discussing the potential risks of replacing the factory damped pulley with a solid undamped aftermarket pulley.

You pose good points, and an inertial dampner does have a lot of benefits. I am waiting on a quote from ati for a damper solution as well.
