    Digital mpg display frustrations

When I purchased my first audi, I noticed the attention to detail and precise engineering. Everything was designed to work perfectly and accurately..... except that is the calculated trip mpg. I am consistently 10% lower in actual mpg than what my trip computer reads. At first I thought this was an anomaly with my A4 but I just purchased a Q5 and it has the same 10% error.

By the way the rest of this car was designed, I'm sure this is deliberate.

Anyone else notice this? It's certainly nothing that affects the car but it does bother my ocd.

Nothing constructive to say regarding the actual car related issue. But maybe some Prozac or Zoloft would help?

Using a VagCom cable, you can code an offset intk the mpg number to make it more realistic. Off the top of my head, I cant remember the code, but a couple minutes of searching should find it easily.

Yes, I have a 2012 VW Tiguan SEL and the 2014 A4 Premium Plus and both read lower when actual calculated by hand. And yes, I agree it's deliberate. I have owned several VW/Audi cars in the past and never saw such a difference.

I have the same problem. The trip MPG is always 3 MPG higher than actual. Maybe we should add this to the diesel emissions scam.

This common in a ton of cars. You should always do the math for a proper mpg reading.

The speedos on these cars (and most, actually) do something similar as well. They'll tell you you're going maybe 5-10% faster than you are. Good for liability purposes (my car said I was going the speed limit, I swear! Damn Audi, I'm suing them for my speeding ticket), but annoying nonetheless. At the drag strip I'm easily going 112-115 or so when I cross the finish line, then get my slip back and I posted a 107 trap speed. That 0-60 time you calculated going off your speedometer? Yeah, it was actually your 0-57 time. At least it's easily corrected with a slightly taller wheel/tire combo.

I noticed the same thing. Computer: 24 mpg. Basic arithmetic: 22 mpg.

I'll poke around in VCDS to see if I can find the display offset.

I think the setting is located in the same place as where you set oil service requirements, special settings or something like that at main screen

    Correct Consumption in DIS program:

    [17 - Instruments] [Adaptation - 10] -> Channel 3 change 100 to xxx (see samples below)

Sample 1 - Calculation based on volume per distance (e.g. l/100km):
    DIS: 9.3 l/100 km.
    Real: 9.8 l/100 km. (100 * 9.8 / 9.3 = 105.38)
Channel 3 will be changed from 100 to 105

Sample 2 - Calculation based on distance per volume (e.g. MPG):
    DIS: 23 MPG.
    Real: 24 MPG. (100 * 23 / 24 = 95.83)
Channel 3 will be changed from 100 to 96

All that said, if your DIS is giving you a higher than calculated MPG reading increase the 100 to something higher. I set mine to 105 and the DIS is now much closer to the mileage/gallons calculated MPG. I may fine tune it a little more in time, depending on continued comparisons down the road. YMMV. Literally.
