Adding extended warranty to used 2014

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ive got my eye on a used 2014 S4 with 33,000. Rear sports, diff, black optic and alu package, B&O, adaptive susp, etc. Selling price is $38,400 at VW dealer. The price seems decent, except it's not a CPO. I called my local audi dealer and they quoted $5300 for 5yr/75K additional miles above 33,000. This is the platinum package or $3900 for 5yr/75K for gold plus package. My question is whether I have to go through dealer to get the extended warranty. When I go to Fidelity's website, I don't see an option to get my own quote. Do I have to go through dealer? He said if I wait till next year, extended warranty costs go up. On the flipside, I can get virtually the same car sans the optic package at an audi dealer with 29,000 miles as a CPO for $40,500. This obviously looks like the better deal. In any case, can one purchase their own extended warranties? thanks.

Yes you can purchase one on your own. Call Troy at fd-warranty.com. That's where I got mine.

My question to you is, why would you want to pay on coverage that you already have until 4yr/50K is up? I would wait until your OEM is almost up and get the Platium "Pure" coverage at that time. Dealerships will ALWAYS tell you that the cost will go up, that's their point to pressuring you to buy now. Having the Platinum coverage while your S4 is still under the 4yr/50K period offers you no warranty advantages.

I've done extensive research and interviewed many service advisers/finance managers so it's just something to think about.

FYI, choosing a CPO car is definitely a good choose, but again, be careful and know your coverage. A CPO'd car DOES NOT have the same coverage as the 4yr/50K once it's beyond that period. IE, your sound system, navi, etc, is not covered under the CPO. It's written in black and white!

have you had to use it yet? i am contemplating doing the same for my 2013 CPO (that is still within original 4yr/50k warranty). just a quick google search turns up horrible reviews for Fidelity...

Yes, thanks, the dealer did mention the platinum was actually better than CPO. Only reason I wanted to know cost now was to see if financially the CPO would be less expensive vs buying the used and adding warranty next year

If your car is CPO then you are covered to 6yr/100k for everything but infotainment.

True. Oddly, that is the only thing left out. Here is the black and white:

    Radio and Navigation
This warranty does not cover navigation components, sound system components, including radios, compact disc and DVD
players, speakers, subwoofer and radio tape head cassette cleaning.

Other important thing to note on CPO warranty is that you have an $85 "deductible" on any repair visit.

Warranty repair free of charge except for deductible of $85 per dealer visit.
Repairs under this warranty will be performed free of charge after a deductible of $85 per dealer visit. In the event several repair attempts
are necessary to repair a manufacturer’s defect in materials or workmanship covered by this warranty, the deductible with respect to that
repair must be paid only once.

Ah, ok. Planning way ahead. Yeah, if you want to hold onto an Audi for 10 years, "self insuring" is probably not the way to go.

This can be done after purchase? I was told when I left with my car that it was one and only chance to get in on the platinum or gold+ package.

Just to be safe call or live chat AoA and give them the VIN to see if the previous owner purchased anything.

In my case the previous owner purchased both the care plan and the platinum coverage plan.

I bought it from a third party so I could not get CPO however, the platinum plan more than covers that.

Both of the plans are tied to the VIN so I just had to go into the local dealer and provide my registration to have everything transferred to my name.

Sucks. Previous owner had car cpo'd , but since he traded it into non Audi dealer, CPO is null and void. Confirmed with Audi today. Seems like double dipping on dealers and 3rd party warranties to charge someone all over again. However, if you buy used CPO through private sale you, as buyer only have to pay $150 to Audi for transfer

Yeah, mine was a non-Audi dealer trade that had it's CPO cancelled also. Is there a practical justification for throwing out a warranty like that?

My original 4yr/50k will expire soonish. Can I get extended warranty and then go stage 2? Or will that void the extended warranty?

My personal opinion is more times than not, you will be paying for the warranty for no reason. In fact, the very math these warranty companies use in order to sell a profitable product would suggest this.

My guess is, out of all the produced S4s (and the vast majority of owners not on this forum) the car is proven to be pretty reliable. I also have a B8 A4 3.2L with 120K miles and most expensive wear and tear I paid for so far was at 100K for the thermostat and water pump...which is considered routine at that point...

Oddly, his quote was more than my local Audi dealer.

The reason, as I just learned is the cost of the warranty goes up the longer you wait. The dealer confirmed this as did FD-warranty 3rd party guy, who says the cost increases at 35K and again at 45K. The other "catch" is the added warranty starts with current mileage and year, not after the factory warranty runs out. They've really got this rigged. If I buy a 2014 that runs out on factory warranty next year and decide to add added 5 yr coverage now, I'm basically losing one year of this added coverage cause the factory coverage is still in place. But, if I wait the year to add the added coverage, it costs more.

IMHO, $5300 is outrageous for an extended warranty. I purchased the Fidelity Silver package for 3 yrs from dealer when I purchased the car with 48K miles . I'm only putting on 6K miles/yr. Didn't need to have a warranty that covered every little thing. These cars have been very reliable. I just wanted coverage if something big went boom. After 2 yrs and 12k miles, i have yet to use the warranty

yep i got duped into getting an extended warranty as well when i got my car. the sales guy told me factory warranty expires in a month-- so i purchased a 3k extended warranty... and when i took it to Audi service about 2 months later, i was informed that its still under factory for another year. went back to the sales guy, confronted him and he said i can give you refund but not in full.. its prorated. so guess what i did, i contacted the owder of the dealership told him that i was misinformed about the warranty and demanded a refund. i was paid back in full.

Funny enough Jeep (and maybe all Chrysler?) have an option for a lifetime bumber to bumber. I'm not an extended warrant fan but we did purchase it for our 2011 Jeep GC for $3k just before our factory warrant ran out (we tend to keep my wife's car for a long time). While we haven't had many problems for the first 90k miles we recently had an issue with the heat (which ended up being the door that controls the air temp). Anyway, they replaced that (which is a big job by itself) the tstat and waterpump... That and the few other things we've had fixed and the warren has paid for itself already.

Wish I could have gotten the same for my S4.

just like the rest of the internetz, i'm wondering if there is a negative bias with the (pretty horrible) reviews about fidelity. if i had the warranty and the claim was paid without any issues, its working like it's supposed to and i wouldn't go out of my way to write a glowing review about it.
