4.2L S5 Performance Clutch. Torn between JHM or EuroCode?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey Guys. I have a 2009 Audi S5 with a 4.2L engine. I've done all the bolt ons and then some. I'm pushing past the clutch at high speeds. I was intending on waiting for the supercharger installation to do the clutch upgrade, but some (EXPLITIVE DELETED) had to take my car offsite to have some work done and when I received it back, the clutch was smoked.

Gooserabaaaa!!! Ok, now that I've calmed down and made my peace with the fact that the clutch upgrade has been pushed forward to the top of the list, I'm torn between the JHM Performance Clutch and the EuroCode Performance Clutch. Both eliminate the Dual Mass Flywheel. I'm wondering if anyone has installed one of either of these and can answer some questions. I'm not questioning the quality of either company, but this car is still going to be an everyday driver. I want to make sure that I don't lose that capacity or take on a whole new breed of problems with this upgrade.

What add-ons do you have installed to push 800hp?

Stock motor, lots of nitrous lol.

But have you heard of Southbend? They have a clutch for the B8 S5 too. But I would go southbend or JHM. Good luck and post some pics of the add ons.

I'm looking to build an engine that will handle the 800 first. I've gotten conflicting information as to whether a factory bottom end would be able to handle that amount of power. I'm not willing to gamble and be wrong on my baby, so I'm impatiently searching for the lower end components that are designed to handle it, then we'll move forward. I've found a couple of companies that want me to let them build my motor for me, but I do my own work. Any suggestions on components would be appreciated as well.

I'm familiar with Southbend on other Audi's, but don't know how they handle the 4.2L and eliminating the dual mass. Has anyone had any experience with them?

I have the APR stage 3 supercharger on my car, and I had the JHM stage 4 performance clutch and flywheel. Clutch is good, and can handle the supercharger no problem. It can be daily driven no problem, drives very similar to a stock clutch, just more bite. Which I liked better then stock. The problem is the pressure plate, just like almost all the aftermarket clutches the pressure plate is an upgraded version of the oem self adjusting pressure plate. It can't handle the power. I'm not sure you will be able to find anything that you can daily drive and be able to handle 800 HP. Only options I know of are the JHM 5R clutch/flywheel, which is what I run and the Southbend Stage 3 endurance clutch/flywheel. Based on the specs I would guess the JHM 5R can handle more power then the Southbend, but the Southbend would be a better daily driver. These are the only 2 clutches I know of that have an entirely new pressure plate that is non self adjusting. I like my JHM clutch, but it is a sprung 6 puck clutch and takes some getting used to. I routinely drive it in traffic without issue, but you have to pay attention to what you are doing. The Southbend is a full face clutch and should be more similiar to stock off the line. I know one person that also has a stage 3 supercharger and runs the Southbend clutch and loves it.

Yes I do, and I love it. Engine revs noticeably quicker, and the liner can replaced instead of replacing the entire flywheel.

Has anyone had any experience with Spec Clutches? I was recommended to use a Spec Stage III+. I know someone that uses it in his Stage III+ S4 and it's a MONSTER!

Do they make a lightweight flywheel for the S5? I've heard of one person running a 6 puck Spec on a track car, but never really heard any feedback. I guess that's a good sign, usually people pipe up pretty quick when they aren't happy.

Yes. They make a lightened single mass. The S4 that's running the Spec Stage III+ out ran an all motor Gallardo.

Sorry to hear that some idiot smoked your clutch. Someone else posted of a shop near me where the same thing happened. You just want to punch a hole in the wall, if not the person's face.

It gets worse than that. I ended up doing the Spec Stage III+ along with differential upgrades, test pipes and completely rebuilt the suspension with fully adjustable/ sperical arms and was breaking in my clutch when the car was run over by an F150. She's gone now. 💔

I was beat up a bit, but I'm working through it. The fun part is trying to get the money spent I her back. I sent all of my receipts to the insurance company. We've been going round and round. I'm thinking of the S6 4.0T next. I'll let you know.
