So i have a 1.8t 2001 awm car. And iv done a couple heads and turbo replacements and did them fine. Ever since though the car has had a strange rattle coming from it. I always thought it was my timing chain since i had a code for that. Changed it recently and the code went away and the car runs well. But the rattle is still there. And it doesnt sound like the timing chain. It comes from somewhere under the car. While sitting in the driver seat with the door open its most prevalent. And less when walking around the car. Its also much louder on the drivers side than the passenger side. Ill take a video and post the noise as well.

I had this annoying rattle coming from my car a while back too.

With some further investigation... I found that it was simply a loose bolt holding on a support bracket by the AC. Was a simple fix for me, hoping it is for you as well.

I don't have a skid plate and the arms that hold it out have an annoying rattle. Since it's not there there's nothing to weigh them down or hold them rigid to the rest of the car.

So many things can rattle. The best way to start is to get a mechanic stethoscope and pin point where the noise is exactly. Unless you want to throw money at the car until you replace the right part. Either way works.

What is a mechanics stethoscope. I am learning how to fix cars from my dad who is auto body guy not really a mechanic. But ive learned a lot doing repairs. Never heard of that.

You can also try masking the sounds on certain parts. IE: Light metallic noise coming from engine bay. You look where the noise is coming from (maybe a heat shield). You put pressure on the part, holding it toward where it should be bolted on to. If the noise stops or is deadened you can deduce it is that part. Before replacing it try tightening it, or if you can remove it do that. The noise should stop. Sometimes just tightening or shimming a loose part can be all it requires.

I watched the video and alot of people were saying the catalyst. Not too sure if this would work, but you could try soaking a rag with water, start your car, and place the rag over the catalytic converter and hold it tight to see if the noise is deadened.

The stethoscope works well because you can place it onto different areas of your engine to hear inaccessible parts, like near a bearing or pulley to hear if they are what is causing a noise.

Found it. I used the stethoscope and the noise is the cat. Nothing else. Thanks a lot for the tool suggestion!
