Anyone Experiencing Gremlins with their Gas Tank Lid?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm talking about the exterior tank cover, not the gas cap. Over my last two fuel stops, I've had issues getting the external cover to open to gain access to the cap/tank. I depress the lid and it doesn't pop open like it should. Confirmed the car is unlocked, and I usually end up having to lock/unlock the car doors multiple times before it eventually pops open. I'm at 41k on my 2013. Hoping it can keep until the 45k service, but this last time the fckr took a solid 5 minutes before I could get it open and I was on absolute zero gas by the time I tracked down a Shell station.

Yes - happened a few weeks ago in my A6 - thought I was going crazy. Literally pushed every corner of the lid and nothing. Pulled the manual latch in the trunk and still nothing.

The minute I pulled into the dealership and got out, I pushed it one last time and it opened. The car must have known how to truly inconvenience me lol

Your release mechanism is fucked brother. Had this issue on my 2013 A6. Got the door release mechanism replaced under warranty.

When I bought my S6. I was told to wipe the white plunger of the mechanism with a paper towel and lubricate with silicon or graphite. No greas/oil/wd40 it will create a bigger issue and attract dirt.

Something is definitely going south. Will report it for repair. I'll take a photo later today if I remember it, but there's a square looking piece at the top of the plunger that seems to rotate and "grab" a slot on the inside of the cover when closed. When you depress the mechanism, that piece seems to rotate into a position where it no longer grabs the door. Mine looks to be slightly off and I'm wondering if, as a result, it's not completely clearing that slot and still grabbing the door. I mean, this thing wasn't even close to opening while I'm standing there pushing on it like an idiot.

I was going to mention all this in my previous comment, but I was feeling lazy. Lol. Exactly the same stuff was going on with me. However, that rotating mechanism had stopped rotating to the unlock position. Push it and it rotated all the way back to the lock position. Mine was so bad that no matter how many times I tried, it wont open. Had to pry the door open to fill up. Lol

Same here, mine seized up in the winter but was replaced under warranty. Emergency release should work though, no fun trying to find it in the middle of a snow storm however

Mine just got stuck on Saturday. Had to give it a good jab. I've heard locking and unlocking the car locks repeatedly would fix it. Had the same issue on my S5 and it eventually went away.

Yup, had the same issue.. first, it was just from time to time, and took around 5 minutes to open... then one day it was not working at all... I had pulled the red emergency cord from the trunk, nothing.. so I had to force open with my hands... just got it replaced last week (70 euro) ... looks like a common issue for the whole VW group as they use the same system on many models.
