Wrong VIN listed on my paperwork...

So I've had two sets of calls from the local Audi dealership due to problems with the paperwork I signed when I picked up the car. The first time they told me the paperwork was destroyed in the mail on the way to back to Audi...fluke accident I guess. I was asked to come back in to sign the bill of sale. Today I got another call from the business manager stating that they listed the wrong VIN on all of the documents. Basically the paperwork says that I leased one (better equipped) car, but what I'm actually driving is a different vehicle. What am I legally required to do? I know the simple and moral thing to do would be to just go resign the papers.

At the end of the day, I'm driving what I agreed to pay for, but I'm curious about how this could actually play out if I decided to be a jack@**. I mean this is the second time I've been inconvenienced by the dealership...

I mean, if you felt like being an ass, they could at least pay you for your time and gas - since they've messed it up twice. Other way to look at it is it's a part of life. Not sure how far the dealer is from you.

Haha, I WANT a new M4. It's not about what I want. I'm just curious about is what is legally required from both parties.

I think the key here is if the lease is also listing the purchase price and residual value based on the better equipped model, or the one you drove off with. If you agreed to pay a lease based on a car you weren't given then you are definitely entitled to the car in the contract. If it's only the vin that was messed up and the price is based on the one you left with then it isn't really possible to get the higher trimmed car.

If it is just a case of wrong VIN in your contract docs, then it is a no-brainer in getting it corrected. However, I think the dealership should be the one to go out of their way and meet you at home or work and get this paperwork done. They screwed up so they should take the extra steps not to be a further inconvenience to you. If they insist in having you swing by their dealership to get this mess fixed, I would expect some kind of compensation like a free dinner for two at a nice resto or a nice Audi Sport jacket or shirt.

Most dealerships have you sign a form obligating you re-sign if there are any errors in paperwork. The biggest thing you need to be concerned about is that you are driving a car that you haven't signed for. This will be a nightmare for you in the future. For example, if you leased the car... you won't be turning in the same car at the end of the lease, and you signed for what sounds to be a more expensive car. If you bought the car; when you go to trade or sell it; the vin won't match and the car isn't legally yours.
