My S3 Lost Boost. Limp mode?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

The car lost boost on hard acceleration. No lights, no noises, no smoke, nothing. I was able to drive fine all the way home for about 30 miles or so. The boost gauge shows nothing. Restarted the car after parked an hour, reved, but there is still no boost.

I have DP, JB1 and aFe dry drop-in filter. Going to scan the car with VCDS tomorrow morning, just wanted to know if anyone had a similar malfunction.

Thank you roadrunner! Anything else I should take into consideration? I also did the so-called intake mode yesterday before replacing the air filter: opened up the driver's side part of the intake and blocked the back opening on the passenger side. Could this have some kind of effect, too?

Shouldn't. Does the car still pull like your getting boost? Seems unusual that you would have Zero boost and no CEL's.

As stated before, do a good visual of all plumbing and vacuum lines. I'm guessing you may of knocked off a line somewhere.

No, it doesn't pull fine, definitely a loss of power. Will check the plumbing and vacuum lines in the morning.

Intake leak wouldn't cause loss of boost, unless it is blocked with a bird the S3 sucked up ;)

Other cars I have had haven't always thrown a CEL when boost is lost

So I started the car in the morning and it was like nothing happened: again, no lights nothing, the boost was back and everything working fine.

We scanned the car and here is the log. I am including malfunctions only. Please note, that the first code was thrown more than one week ago and we intentionally didn't clear that to see if it repeats or not.

The plumbing, everything seems to be intact. Any thoughts, guys?

I assume you are referring to JB1: everything looks fine. I am going to intensively look later today.

We just thoroughly checked the car and rescanned it. The previous codes didn't show anymore and everything is intact. The car runs fine. I just don't know what happened.

Seems a few S3's are having the same issues of CEL and not running right then *poof* all perfect again.. Seems ECU related if they car just up and runs fine again magically. Or faulty sensors.. wiring... Electrical Gremlins... the worst kind of issues u can have. I'd rather have piston failures.... at least you know how to fix it.

No, not the JB1. If you've been running it for a while you might want to check your spark plugs. Cylinder will run hotter, need to run a cooler plug. Plugs will burn out faster.

Also, did you through a EPC or CEL?

I just had the loss of boost happen to me yesterday, mothers day. I do have the Unitronic Stage 1 installed on my '16 S3 also, which made me think it was an "overboost" issue.

I was turning onto a back road and put it to the floor, no boost and only reved to 5k. Absolutely no warning lights, odd noises, nothing.

I shut the car down, restarted, all good again. 10 miles later ... pulling great, then stops pulling at 60, complete loss of boost. Shut it down again, restored boost back to normal. Drove it 60 miles home without issue, but refrained from going WOT.

    Pulled codes today, nothing there.

If anyone has any info on this, it's greatly appreciated.

    **UPDATE**

I have yet to have any of the same issues. I have been carrying around my laptop and VCDS to look further into it during the event. I will continue to update if I find anything.

I've also experienced problems where my turbo just shuts off on me. I throw an EPC randomly while driving and my turbo just turns off. I think it has happened 2-3 times in the last year for me. Each time it was fixed by just turning to car off and on. Not sure why.
