    Late night clay action

Had nothing to do tonight, so bathed my car for an hour and started to clay the beast. It always amazes me how soft the paint feels after a good clay.

Have you tried any of the clay mitts or do you use the old school stuff? I bought a mitt but haven't tried it yet. I find claying to be such a pain in the ass, at least with polishing you see results instantly but claying is just hard work to remove shine before you do more hard work to put it back :)

I do it with clay. It takes forever (6 hours ), but the results speak for themself. Didn't know there was a mitt for claying, id be very skeptical, as you wouldn't be able to fold the used contaminated surface like a clay bar.

Yeah, I get OCD when I detail. I usually take 10+ hours for full exterior detailing.

I can understand that but 6 hrs to clay is ridiculous.

It hasn't been clayed in 2 years and ~40k miles. Lots of contamination.

A good iron cleansing would have helped you tremendously before the clay.

Im sorry....but 6 hours on claying and youre doing something terribly wrong. It is roughly 6 hours to wash-clay-wash-polish-finishing polish-coat a 4 door sedan. I never wax, opti-coat 100% of the time.

And plus, if you dont get protection on the paint (and definitely polish) right after claying you are leaving it pretty vulnerable. Stopping at claying is like putting the condom on, getting her all ready to go, then just taking it off and leaving the room. Or maybe its like putting the condom on, taking the condom off, then running around town fucking all willy-nilly and such.

Who said I didn't wax it, I didn't...And why are you speaking to me in such a tone???

BTW Mr. Black S4 1 of 1. Black is the most common color, its not unique, regardless of options. Get over yourself lolz.

Hehehe. Technically it IS a one of one. Only car with my options on it, confirmed by AoA, but I digress, back to the topic of claying. No hard feelings just figured maybe you didnt realize you were doing something wrong?

I spent 6.5 hours claying the wife's new suv last weekend, 6 sounds right if it's been awhile. No sense doing it if you're going to half ass it and go through the motions.

I also agree the paint feeling amazing alone is worth the elbow grease.

Thanks man, and agreed about who cares...it's like I'm offending people by how long I took lol. Guess my paints giving a big middle finger right now :)

I agree 6 hours is quite some time for clay. But hey, sometimes you just have to rub her down a little longer!

Some people are just OCD like that and take extra time to do it. I say more power to OP Afterall it's only his time and he clearly enjoys his results. I like to pay extra attention and go one step further than 99% whether I wrench on a car or just detail it. Decent pictures are a must after you're done hehe

I feel like my car took a good 5 hours to wash & clay last time I did it, at least.

If you only drive your garage queen 2000 miles a year, yeah I bet a wash-clay-wax is only a 1-2 hour affair. But if you drive 20k+ miles between clays yeah it's gonna have a whole lot more crap to get out and take a lot longer. Add in some perfectionism and it's an all day affair.

Looks good OP I need to do mine, badly.

Beautiful job. I wish I had the patience to really take the time to clay mine at times. I usually get into turbo mode and jump through it too quickly. Keep it up!

I officially just finished my detailing journey 30 min ago. 14 hours into the beast this time around, it needed some TLC. The S4 was my daily with many long commutes, hence the lengthy detail. It has since been relegated to garage queen, for weekends and dry weather.

Also lined up my commuter for a face off with the beast...who will blink first?

Time to rest my back, ouch.

Well, now that I've read this post, and I found out it only takes six hours to clay a car, I ordered clay and wax kits and I'll give it a run this weekend!

Awww man I'd love to have a green Audi. Got an Allraoad of the same color here at the shop and every time I wish mine was the same color. Is your interior green as well? The Allroads interior is green which is odd for me haha.

Do a good iron cleansing before the clay. Might want to readup on these things before going to town on it. You can cause more bad then good without a proper technique.

Goodwood is just such a wonderfully unique and beautiful color. Your car looks lovely! If I remember correctly are you in the Springs OP? Also, how did you get your 911 oil cap to fit? Saw that in your mod list. I bought one with a coolant cap a while back but couldn't get it to fit on the car

I had to separate the 911 cap (top portion) and mate it to the S4 cap. I can't remember exactly what was involved, but that's the secret.

Haha I assumed that was how to do it. I have a spare stock oil cap as well. I'll try and play around with it when I come home. Anything is better than dropping $100 something on that R8 one

Man on my own car I would take pretty long to make it perfect... Of course if it would be customers car you wouldn't take that long cuz then ur not making anything... But if it's ur own car then you can do whatever you want and take how much time you need to make it perfect!
