Most efficient way to swap an engine?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So after several months of trying to find something to replace my engine with, I finally have something available.
I'll be swapping my AMB with an AWM from a Passat.

What I'm asking is whats the quickest easiest way to swap them out?
I'm not looking for shortcuts, but the garage I'll be doing the work at has limited time available so I wanna get in and out as fast as I can.
And, assuming all goes well (because everyone loves an easy job when working on their car), how long should this take me?

And last question, according to this post, the original poster had an issue with the cv axle bolt pattern being different,
and someone told him to swap the flanges. OP states his car is FWD. My car is quattro. Will this be an issue I'll be running into as well?
And if so, how will I got about swapping the flanges? I ask because I haven't done this before and I don't have a manual to refer to.

Really the big question is whether or not you have manual or automatic and what transmission did the donor car have.

I have a A4 (AMB) and a Passat (AWM). The general consensus, once transmission type is ironed out is to swap the exterior engine parts from your car to the donor engine. I can tell you that the AMB has a single serp belt, the AWM has two. One drives the AC, the other drives everything else. The A4 has two electric cooling fans, the Passat has one electric and one mechanical (driven by the serp belt), it's reported that the thermostat is different, as is the cooling fan. The PCV system is slightly different as well.

Ok, but I'm not using anything external from the AMW engine. I just need the block. Everything external from my AMB is going to be swapped over.
Will that be an issue at all or should everything swap over just fine?

6 Hours isn't too bad. So, going by your time, assuming all goes well, I could possibly get it done in a day..

In a day!! Maybe with 2 others. Take your time, nothing worse than forgetting to install something you left out. And was probably easier 3 hours ago when.....

    I know about this!!!!

I understand taking my time, but like I said, the garage access is limited so I'm looking for tips on how to make this as seamless as I can. :P I'm sure I can get by taking 2 days to do it.

Which I just remembered, I have a new heater core I need to install as well.. More time!

If you have a lift and air tools / the proper tools for the job, you can get the engine out in about 3 hours especially if you have help.

This. Easy peasy if you know what needs to come off and what doesn't.

1.8t's are the shit for engine pulls.
