I recently bought my first audi (2005.5 a4 2.0t quattro) and am looking to add an AUX input to the original Symphony II HU. I'm aware that there are "plug-and-play" options that are compatible with the Symphony II (e.g., BlitzSafe, etc.), but I like to DIY and would prefer to not shell out $60+ for an AUX input unless absolutely necessary. That said, I've done some research and have a couple questions regarding the DIY options.
Unfortunately since I have the II and not the II+, I cannot simply add an AUX jack + VAG-COM the EXT source has described here. This leaves me with two options (unless I'm missing something):
1. Modding CD Input - This guide mentions that an external CD changer is required, which I don't believe I have (CD inserts right into the HU on the Symphony II, and I don't think I have the 6-disc changer). However, does anyone know of a way to do this mod without the CD changer? Surely there should be a way, as the audio from the CD must still input into the amp, speaker out, etc. in the HU (although this may be PCB level connections rather than external wires). I don't have the keys to remove the HU so I haven't been able to check for myself.
2. Modding SAT Input - I've heard the SAT audio can also be spliced to add an AUX input, but I'm not 100% sure if my car is wired for satellite radio. When I press the SAT button, the display on the HU says "Call 1-800-SIRI" or something along those lines - does that mean I'm wired in? Again, I don't have the keys so I haven't been able to see for myself.
Lastly, can anyone with experience doing the CD/SAT mods comment on the AUX sound quality? I currently use a cassette->3.5mm plug to play music from my phone, and it sounds really distorted at high frequencies/volume. If these mods don't offer better sound quality, I guess there wouldn't been any reason for going through the effort (aside from the aesthetic improvement).
Thanks in advance for any help!
