Adding AUX input to Symphony II (not II+)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I recently bought my first audi (2005.5 a4 2.0t quattro) and am looking to add an AUX input to the original Symphony II HU. I'm aware that there are "plug-and-play" options that are compatible with the Symphony II (e.g., BlitzSafe, etc.), but I like to DIY and would prefer to not shell out $60+ for an AUX input unless absolutely necessary. That said, I've done some research and have a couple questions regarding the DIY options.

Unfortunately since I have the II and not the II+, I cannot simply add an AUX jack + VAG-COM the EXT source has described here. This leaves me with two options (unless I'm missing something):

    1. Modding CD Input - This guide mentions that an external CD changer is required, which I don't believe I have (CD inserts right into the HU on the Symphony II, and I don't think I have the 6-disc changer). However, does anyone know of a way to do this mod without the CD changer? Surely there should be a way, as the audio from the CD must still input into the amp, speaker out, etc. in the HU (although this may be PCB level connections rather than external wires). I don't have the keys to remove the HU so I haven't been able to check for myself.

    2. Modding SAT Input - I've heard the SAT audio can also be spliced to add an AUX input, but I'm not 100% sure if my car is wired for satellite radio. When I press the SAT button, the display on the HU says "Call 1-800-SIRI" or something along those lines - does that mean I'm wired in? Again, I don't have the keys so I haven't been able to see for myself.

Lastly, can anyone with experience doing the CD/SAT mods comment on the AUX sound quality? I currently use a cassette->3.5mm plug to play music from my phone, and it sounds really distorted at high frequencies/volume. If these mods don't offer better sound quality, I guess there wouldn't been any reason for going through the effort (aside from the aesthetic improvement).

Thanks in advance for any help!

Also, I've considered upgrading to the II+, but I've read that the upgrade causes quite a bit of AM/FM distortion due to the antenna type mismatch. Is this accurate, and is there a fix? Reason I ask is that I've seen a few II+'s on here/craigslist for pretty cheap.

this should work with phone cable and gives you an aux input as well: http://enfigcarstereo.com/ENFIG_AU2_IPDU_AUX.html

note that I have not done this yet, but have been talking to enfig about this same issue with the symphony II

I have a symphony II+ but I did not care for the radio reception issues and its sound.

    my 2 cents.

I used a similar kit on mine, sounds great and is plug and play. Wouldn't add aux any other way after going this route.

Second this. I have the DICE i-AUDI-r version (which isn't as nice as this), but I bought it way back in '10 and the options were more limited. I am not sure this one existed.

I spliced into my sat input with a self switching aux jack and the sound quality is great.

I have heard you can trick the head unit into thinking that there is sat installed by putting a resistor across the the non audio inputs from the sat box, but I dont know for sure nor so I know the resistor value.

Awesome, do you know if there's a way to easily tell if you're wired for sat (i.e., without taking the radio out)? As I mentioned in OP, when I press the sat button a "call sirius" message pops up, but I'm not sure if this is any indicator.

I would say look for the sat module located in the trunk (forget where exactly). Although mine never says to call Sirius even though I don't have it activated, so guessing you don't have it. But doesn't hurt to check
