The biggest deciding factor on what tune to go with, IMO, should be based on the available customer support in your area. If you can get GIAC 20 miles away but have to drive 150 miles to your nearest APR dealer then go GIAC, and vice versa.
That being said, all these tunes produce power by manipulating the same variables, so if one is producing more power, it is also pushing the limits of safety to a greater degree. It depends what you are looking for....are you looking to frequently go to the dragstrip for the best times, or are you looking to have a more powerful but reliable daily driver?
I will tell you this. I have had APR tunes on all my Audis going back to 1999, and have had zero problems ever. Nationwide, they also, by far, have the biggest support network. But, I am also one who values a certain amount of reliability and the peace of mind that comes with that. My S6 is my daily driver so I don't need my poor turbos running on the ragged edge screaming bloody murder. Most of the time, I am actually running the 91 octane program with 93 fuel in the tank. When I am in a more spirited mood, my APR mobile lets me switch in like 5 seconds to the full 93 program.
In terms of the subjective driving experience, it is the TCU tune that also makes a world of difference on DSG cars. The stock TCU programming is far too soft. I am not certain why Audi did this, because on my wife's S3, it is perfect. D holds the gears for just a little longer, and S really holds the gears nicely without constantly upshifting. Manual is now manual.
