    B8.5 S4 Seat Back Issue

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I brought my car to the dealership to see if they can resolve an issue I have been having with play in the seat back.

They got back to me saying that it appears to be normal.

    Has anyone experienced this issue?

When you come to stop its as if the seat back rocks forward then back. It's been driving me crazy and need help explaining to them what I am experiencing.

    Thanks in advance.

Seat rocking is super super common in B8.5s.. People have entirely different experiences getting the dealer to do something about it. Most just go sit in another new car on the lot and if it does it they say 'thats normal' and try to drop it.

The loaner vehicle i'm driving around right now does it. I can hear and feel it shift every time I accelerate or brake, even when taking turns. I would be surprised that anyone would consider this acceptable. It might be normal, but it really shouldn't be.

    Thanks fellas.

Now how do I explain this to the shop foreman because the claimed to not be able to diagnose anything?

It's this and the 2013 steering issue that makes me hate my car.

This was a SUPER common problem in the B5 S4. I remember mine doing it.

Seats were sorta bolted down the same way to the floor as the B8. Obviously the B8 is has a new mechanism thing going on.

I've had pretty good results searching everything on here. Haven't seen any threads on this.

    How have others resolved this?

I'm on my 3rd B8 S4. First 2 I got new. Put 30k miles on the 2010 and 5k on the 2014. no seat rocking although i remember some posts about it. bought my 2011 with 49k on it and it has had the seat rocking from day 1. It is annoying, but I don't believe anyone has come up with a definitive fix. Even those who have take their cars into the dealer have not generally had the problem rectified. I would be interested to know what if anything has been done to actually fix the problem. And actually, my problem does not seem to be associated with the seat back. The entire seat seems to move.

Are you able to manually rock the seat? Or does it only occur while driving, like it requires the force of the car accelerating/decelerating to excite it?

THis happened to me, my dealer fixed it. For some reason they said this is not something covered under warranty, but we fixed it any way for you. I didn't complain just said thanks.

Yes the seat will rock if I play with the seat back. However it does it when coming to a stop and the force throws the seat forward.

this may not be the answer anyone wants but have you tried putting some folder paper to fill the gap? like if you had a table that wobbled? I don't have this issue but would try this in my car if the dealer didn't want to fix it. If it works, it may annoy you to sit in the back and feel the different seating angle, but people who don't normally sit in your rear seats may not even notice it. just a thought. good luck.

This annoys the hell out of me too, and my passenger seat does not do it. I've bought it to my dealer a couple times and they say they can't replicate

I had the same problem until I had a $27k deer accident. side impact mostly, just severe enough to bend the rear subframe, but not the unibody. After the repairs, no more rocking, and less creaks than before!

So basically the solution is to crash hard enough that you "compress" everything together

Hate it when they can't "reproduce the issue". Take him for a spin with you in the car, and say it's a huge safety issue because it might alter the pressure you are applying to the pedals with your feet.

I went for a ride with the foreman and had him drive and he was able to feel the seat back issue and steering issue.

I took my car for the weekend.

Supposed to drop it back off Monday for him to take a look at.

Will update as I discover more.

I had this issue on my 2013 S4. ( which had lots of issues BTW) It was fixed under warranty. I believe they replaced the rails and bolts.
It was very annoying - this slight movement of the seat when going to complete stop. NO problems on my current 2014 S4.

Well after holding onto my car for an additional 3 days I was told that this seems completely normal and is how the seat feels on another S4 they had in.

So if anyone gives this a shot and figures out a resolution. Please post.

Mine was doing this too, at first it was normal, so I said go sit in the one in the showroom and tell me its normal, after that it was "the bolts weren't torqued properly" and then they just replaced the frame. It was beyond annoying to deal with.
