I have a 2002 b6 and I want somewhere along the lines of 400hp. I would love to go with a v8 from the s4 or possibly even the rs4, if that is too crazy of an idea I can just have the 1.8 built. Any opinions?

You can make 400hp from a 1.8t without too much trouble. V8's make an awesome sound and with the JHM supercharger you're well over 500hp, but be prepared to accept poor fuel consumption. I'm not sure what a high hp 1.8t does for fuel consumption but I'd bet it's better than the S4 motor. Then consider the work of a transplant vs adding a big turbo and parts.

in all reality, i think to make the power you want, your most reliable swap would be a 2.7 with mildly tuned k04's.
with the 1.8, youre losing alot of reliability at 400hp. With the V8, the S4 doesnt give you 400hp, the RS4 gives you 450HP but thats at crank, translates to roughly 320 at the wheels when all is said and done.

400 wheel HP or 400 crank HP? Either way, thats a fairly lofty goal that will require extensive engine mods (and supporting braking a suspension upgrades to be useful). You would be better off reducing your power goals slightly, or starting with a better platform (S4/RS4) IMO.

I definitely do not want to buy another b6 platform because I have put a lot of work into my current one and I know all the usual wear and tear items and I don't want to go through that twice. If I have arround 6k for the engine alone what would you guys recommend doing to it? I have an idea but I am just curious what you guys think

400hp out of an 1.8T your going to need Rods at minimum. Pistons would be a good idea.

Would also Need turbo (BT), Intercooler, clutch, Diverter Valve(depending on setup) and most likely Hi-flow manifolds.

for 400HP out of a 1.8T, going to cost you probably $6K + to do it properly.

A GTRS eliminator is a good option, with near enough to 300HP (CHP), no internals need to be replaced with a conservative tune.

I assure you, a GTRS'd 1.8T A4, will be a very quick car, as a Stage 1+ is quick around town.

The B6 and B7 S4 is simply one of audi's worst motors. It's not going to make over 300 wheel stock, it's prone to timing chain guide issues, cylinder scoring , and many other things. It's a ticking time bomb. Plus it's embarrassing when a BT 1.8T pulls on you in your V8 ;)

To do a timing chain job on the 4.2 the motor must come out. Everything is in the back of the motor by the firewall so you can't do it without. Google It. It looks like the inside of a Swiss watch. It'll cost you as much as going big turbo on a 1.8T if you have a shop do the timing chain job. Id upgrade your turbo or sell your car and get a C63 AMG.

ive got roughly 10k in my BT setup along with supporting mods and i just have the bare minimun for 400whp. Even so, im kind of risking it with OEM pistons and non built head.
