Currently under car looking for coolant leak

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As the title says I'm under the car right now looking for a leak.. seems to be coming from the front, and more driver side than passenger... and I can't see anything. There was a couple drops on the coolant pipe that runs next to the oil pan, but no trail to follow. It's a sizeable leak.. what could I be missing here

Turbo lines would be a good place to start. Beyond that, possibly a leaking water pump or thermostat. Don't rule out the coolant flange since it can drip down and run along other parts before hitting the ground.

That's the flange, looks pretty good there. T stat should have a leak right under the alternator more or less right? Like I can't even find a trail of dried coolant hah.

Where would the water pump and turbo lines leak to? I'm a very novice mechanic hahah.

What about the oil filter housing and stand (not the part with the actual filter, but the entire casing). I had a leak there, and I swear I could see the red of coolant. Of course, I also found oil everywhere.

Really dumb suggestion--did you just add coolant? The first time I added coolant, I spilled it into the ring around the filler neck of the overflow bottle. Apparently, that drains straight out the bottom of the overflow bottle. I thought I was leaking coolant from a crack in the bottle until I realized what I did. Sorry, I'm pretty novice too, so I apologize if I didn't describe something right or call it by the correct name.

While looking, I caught a drip on the forehead. And found a track.. what am I looking at here?

Hahah I've been adding it every other week or so, to keep the level proper. But never over filled or missed so definitely not that haha, I appreciate the input though!

From the top, also see a leak here. I believe this is going into the t stat correct? I'm thinking this is running down to where I see the leak below.

Yeah, that's the vicinity of the thermostat. So maybe that is your culprit. Should be a DIY/sticky on here to do that.

Has it ever been changed? How many miles? I think mine went between 120k and 130k.

Changed it out around 120k because it was stuck open, about 2 years ago exactly. I don't remember the brand though, I got it from rock auto. I've a feeling the o ring went and not the t stat itself.

That's my gut, it's that O ring. But by the time you get to that O ring, your two easy bolts from swapping the stat. Might as well just do it.

Ah yeah I'd definitely just swap it out. Only like $30 anyway

So you're saying just do the o ring not the whole t stat swap?

That o-ring doesn't come with a new thermostat. At least it didn't with mine. You will need to buy one whether you replace the tstat or not. If you have replaced it recently, I wouldn't mess with it. It's not like it's THAT hard to get to.

Ah I see. Yeah I mean it's still functioning properly besides the leak. I guess worst case I find out once I'm in there that I need a t stat and grab one from the dealer.

    Thanks everyone for the help!

When you do replace it, clean it REALLY well. Same case as with the rear coolant flange--if you don't clean it really well, it'll lodge on some debris or not sit perfect, and you end up with that all over again.

The leaking pipe you mean? That's a good idea

That's where I got mine. It was only $4.50...cheapest trip to the dealer in a long time.
