    20 or 22" wheels

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    hi guys,
I want to change my wheels on my SQ5 but I have a hard time. choosing between 20" and 22" (21" are out of my choice because of the tire price)

I dont know if 20" will be too little for the SQ.
if you are dropped on 20" can you post picture of your ride?

I find 22" too big for the SQ5....
again if you are dropped on 22" can you post pictures?

    heres my stance.

22x10.5 et30. I personally wouldn't run anything less than a 21 on the Q but that is just MY personal preference. If you like more meat on your tires then 20's would probably be the way to go.

I went with 20s and a lot of meat.

I really like the extra meat since the roads are shit where I live and I can bomb around without a worry.

I think it really depends on the style of the wheel as there are some 20s that look really good and some that don't compliment the SQ.
An example of 20" looking great, @riceboy22

I like 20's wide and meaty tires... Anything 20+ is way too big in my opinion...

I think it depends on your version of ride quality and what you like visually. 22's RQ will suffer some.
I have been looking for a long time with similar questions. My opinion is the 20's give you a meaty look that 'fits' best on the ones not lowered much like 1-2" from US spec, When it gets dropped and the top of the wheel is at the arch (like yours) the 22's look sick like Im-audi-here, and Mops.
The 20's fit right in my eye on Jimmenez pictured above.

I also priced some wider 20's for say 20/9.5 or 20/10 and the prices seem to go up from 255's

Then look at miles and his new wheels look stellar- but I personally am not a fan of the stretched tire look and I like the rims to at least have some margin of tire before the rim curbs.

I also wonder on the durability of the 22's long term- both wheel and tire.

It's all a matter of taste and opinion. There is 13 pages with about 5 pages of pics between the banter on the wheel thread.

I would just go with 21's. Are tires really THAT expensive?? Why?

I think OP should go with a setup like what Mops has. They look larger than 20's, at least in my opinion, and his setup looks freaking amazing. OP thinks 22's are too large so the only logical option is 20's or 21's. SQ already looks awesome but I understand wanting new wheels.

I really like it I have 21" Rotiform SPF on 275/30/21 Pirelli tires I use when I wanna drive aggressive at the track or the set between wheels lol. Tires are about less by $200 each. So $800 on a set of 4 good tires.

    At least here in Canada...

yes they seriously are!! its unreal. i didn't want to go 22's ... but 21" tires are re-re expensive. like you're like, well at that point i might as well get 3pc wheels expensive. and then you make horrible decisions with Mops' help lmao

at least for me - i go through tires a lot LOL.

Lmao haha thanks drum. Well then.....fuck it guess i would go with 22's then. i feel like 20's are just a bit too small. Plus i have 19's right now and it makes me wanna cry. Im hoping if i get 22's maybe it will help bridge the gap the H&R's can't cover?? Idk just thinking.

yeah that is usually correct but unfortunately the steering knuckle in the front prevents you from going above a certain overall diameter (of the wheel + tire)...

Thanks... But I love the 21's just not when i'm buying new tires for it.

20's would be a great winter tire.

22 tires are a lot less than 21, better variety of models too.

20s look too small unless you are slammed.

I have to through some support for 21". Yes choices suck, especially in 285/35R21 but at least they are Michelin PSS, but they do look good and provide protection from your awesome Montreal roads.

And I know at least one person who runs 22" changing over to the 21" due to this.

No reason not to. There's tires out there to be found with a little searching. It seems like there are more tires available each time I look into them. I get a set of 295/35ZR21, shipped, for less than $1,100, and these Vredesteins really rock. I've got 2 track days and 15K miles on them. . .still good. . .and with excellent grip.

My car came with 21's, I would have preferred 20's initially. Having lived with them for a few months, I could not imagine going bigger or smaller. Expensive is a relative term, the incremental cost of 21's is small relative to the annual depreciation and other operating costs over the life of a set of tires.

You guys are crazy with putting on 22s and 35 series tires! My drive is rough as heck with 20s and 45 series. A 22 inch wheel will only slow down your acceleration, decrease braking ability and roughen up the ride. Whatever looks best though I guess...
