turn off car and let it sit for a few minutes, and then try again. im assuming you know that to get an accurate reading car must be off and sitting for a while on a level surface.

Does it have to be completely started after shut off?

to check oil level accurately in a traditional car with a dipstick it needs to be off and sitting for a while so most of the oil in the engine goes into the pan, the audi has the dumb mmi feature unless you choose to buy a dipstick to check it manually. ie the old fashioned way

im not sure exactly on the protocol for checking oil level via the mmi gauge but i would assume those things still apply? you never check oil while engine is idling unless you want an inaccurate reading, so just put the key in the car in accessory mode/engine off and check via mmi

fwiw if the oil level is low on the mmi/no dipsitck and its almost empty on the display this is equivalent to 1 quart of oil, it doesnt mean your engine has no oil.

if your engine was almost out of oil and or you have major leak you would get an oil light on the dash cluster.

Car has to be warmed and off for at least two mins. to get a reading.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.
