    Possible Unicorn Sighting?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey, folks, I wanted to get a round of opinions on an '04 Silver Avant 6MT that just popped up at a local VW dealer in town. It has just over 112k on the clock. Carfax history looks pretty good... the original owner seems to have taken care of it. Valve cover gaskets were replaced a while back, but the big news is that the timing service was already performed. The dealer claims to have receipts showing what was done and where. They're asking $12,9K for it. They're a pretty reputable dealer around here. Thoughts?

    http://www.vordermanvw.com/VehicleDe...-IN/2742507293

The funny thing is, I have an '08 B7 S4, my neighbor on one side as an '08 B7 A4, and my neighbor on the other side is the one interested in this Avant. We may have to start a gang! Who's in!?

    Thanks in advance!

Hey! That looks familiar! It's funny, as soon as I posted that link this morning, I looked around through the classifieds and found 2 other silver avants for sale... one was an auto, though. So, maybe less unicorny than I thought, but, still a nice car. What do guys think?

No its not a unicorn IMO -- timing chain performed is a huge bonus though. Tell them to throw some coolant in that puppy. Also that interior trim looks wrapped in some photos and this has no NAV (normally buttons by cig lighter) Exhaust tips look much bigger than the OEM dinky ones too...

    I love avants -- GL!

heh they're certainly not unicorns, but i'd call B6/B7 S4 Avants "somewhat rare" with less than 5000 sent to the US (North America?). it looks roughly 50/50 between stick and Tip.

what's definitely rare is (verifiable) timing chain work and a reasonable price. mine had no timing chain service, but flying to Kentucky and driving it back was still cheaper than what people were charging in California and Washington!

So, assuming all is, for the most part, well mechanically and cosmetically, is the asking price decent? It's hard to figure out on a car like this.

i've scraped a lot of threads with supposed production numbers from AoA and they definitely seem to vary - sometimes a lot (which is why i generalized, heh). i think there are mix-ups with Avant vs. sedan, manual vs. Tip, and - possibly most of all - U.S.-only versus North America (or at least U.S. + Canada).

i wish they would just _publish_ these numbers in some history section and be done with it. i'm sure their customer service people would appreciate it!

i have been collecting avant numbers here http://avantregistry.com/

All the numbers on the site came directly from AoA via vin inquiries, an attempt to be as accurate as possible. There are some charts on the this page http://avantregistry.com/charts.php that show the numbers of avants by year broken by auto and manual.

for the 04 avant 6spd I have 297 total shipped to the US.

    :D

*when i say i have been collecting, it's been with teh help of lots of members on the site here submitting their VINs and forwarding results to me. team effort!

and if you are curious the current most unicorny avants on the site are....

    2008 s4 4.2 6-spd Ibis White Silver 1
    2007 a4 3.2 6-spd Ibis White Ebony 2

    2001 a4 1.8t 5-spd India Red red/onyx 3
    2007 a4 3.2 6-spd Ibis White 3
    2008 s4 4.2 6-spd Brilliant Red 3

number on the far right is the number of cars in that configuration. for example, only one 2008 6spd s4 avant in Ibis White with Silver Interior while there are three 2008 6psd s4 avants in Brilliant red

The production numbers are interesting information, but disturbing there are no reliable figures. I agree this car is no unicorn but appears to be in great shape for the miles. Seems like a good buy.

That was the spec of my first B6 S4 Avant back in 2003 (yes we DID get the B6 S4 in the UK in 2003, mine was the first B6 S4 delivered to the dealership) - Nogaro with matching blue alcantara & leather interior and a 6MT plus rear seat heating and analog TV.

Mine isn't avant, but rather sedan. The one I posted about before is an Avant. I don't have a VIN for that particular car(I do have VINs for three out of 5). When I called AoA regarding production numbers for B6 S4s in Atlas Gray, she gave me the following info as per my build thread:
    MY2004: 2 Manual Sedans, 1 Manual Avant
    MY2005: 1 Manual Sedan(mine), 1 Automatic Sedan
So I'm not sure, how you will add this to your registry as the above info was given to me by AoA rep over the phone.

FIY There's also at least one B7 S4 Avant in Quartz Gray, B7 S4 Avant in Venetian Violet, B7 S4 Avant in some weird awesome color - no idea on a name(search username Frink) Forgot to add a Nogaro Blue B7 S4 Avant.

so, i'll throw this out there: i don't really care about colors or configurations as an element of rarity. my Deep Sea Blue Pearl with a bunch of options might be considered "rare" by some people, but i only care about A4 versus S4, Avant versus sedan, and auto versus manual.

why? because you could custom-order these cars. it's one thing to say "only 5 of these were made because Audi chose to/could only make that many", but in my book it's completely different to say "only 5 of these were made because only 5 people ordered them." maybe those 5 people had really bad taste and ordered ugly cars, but it doesn't make them special. what's special is production-related rarity!

not sure if you have seen the official response that audi provides when you make the inquiry. they start by telling you how many of you car irrellevant of color, so year, model, transmission. then they tell of those how many were in your exterior color, then how many of those were in your interior color. They do not break down based on packages or trim level.

as for your definition of rare, rare has a pretty concise and clear definition; "a thing not occurring very often" so while you might not hold much value in a custom colored car (i personally don't either) it is still rare.

@emilio Yeah.. Rarity isn't really open to personal taste as a qualifier.. For example, I can't just state that in my opinion a blue diamond is not rare.. That would be just as ridiculous as what you are saying. But certainly compared to a WRX, or a M3, and S4 Avant is a pretty rare car.
