    Pulley swap help needed

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I tried to swap my cts pulley by myself and now I'm in deep. Has anyone ever ran into the problem of the new pulley not going on after heating up. I'm pretty much out of ideas I've tried 350 and now I'm trying 400 but it won't slip on should I just reheat the stock and give up? I really just want to get my car back together so I can get to work tomorrow. Any ideas? Sorry if this has been discussed before but no time to search.

Don't give up! I started off by taping a bag of ice around the stem the pulley goes on. I started heating the pulley at 250 and then gradually moved up in temperatures all the way to I think 450. I'm not exactly sure how high in temps I actually went to, but I know I took my time with the heating as I started heating while disassembly took place. I believe I heated the pulley up for at least two and a half to three hours (probably not necessary but worked for me). The pulley slid on no problem after this. Tony from EPL told me to do it this way. Good luck.

You have canned air? Try turning the can upside down and use the freezing action on the shaft.

they are right. gotta cool the snout. when I get there I'm planning on 500* oven and icing the snout, then hitting it with CO2 just before fitting.

I wish I had some canned air but I don't tonight, I've got an ice pack on the shaft right now and heating the pulley for a full hour again this time at 400. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to wait to get some air tomorrow and try again. Car pool call already went out for tomorrow. Thanks for all the ideas so far, if there are any more please feel free to add them. This is why I love this site.

Crank it up to 450 like suggested, it can only help.

450 FTW!! Thanks so much for all the tips, just slid right on after heating to 450 for 1.5 hours and icing the shaft in the mean time. Now my anxiety can go down just need to put everything back together tomorrow after work, and flash the stage 2 file. Now time to sit back and watch the hawks game.

Yea You always want to heat the part for atleast an hour and at high temp to get it to expand fully. I have to do this at work for some gears. And we heat them at 600 for about an hour- hour 1/2 and they slide right on. just make sure you have some welding gloves or some BBQ gloves. As it gets hot quick with gloves on.

I think they should put 450 in the install instructions? Or 500? 350 did not do it for me at all either. I did not cool the shaft, but would have had I known to and I made 2 attempts to get that damn thing on, had to actually use a torch with map gas for about 15 seconds after it got stuck part way on! (I do not recommend this do to all the non-metal parts in that SC area!)

On a related note, I wondered afterwards, does the pulley have a groove or "stop" so that we know it is in the right position to align with the belt? If it's off by a little bit, that belt would not be running true?
