Diff fluid change

Is it worth changing out the diff fluid? I know the tranny is a 'lifetime' fill but should be done anyways, was wondering if the diff was the same way. Also is there a front diff? I'm not really sure how AWD works, my previous 2 cars were RWD and either japanese or american haha.

My car is an 05, and has 93K miles, but the tranny was done a few years ago.

You have a 2 diffs on the car; front and rear. Changing out the diff fluid is never a bad thing.

Thanks for the help, as always Sin. :) Is mobil 1 75w/90 the fluid to use (that's what I used on my old car)? Or is there some specific vag fluid that I need?

remember there's the diff and transfer case fluids.

Differential, 09L Front..........1.1 liters
Differential, 01R Rear..........1.5 liters
Transfer Case, 09L..........0.6 liters

75w90 Mobil 1 is perfect for the front and rear diff.

For the center Torsen, you should use the Audi specific stuff:

Ive been using redline 75w90 in all three differentials for 30k miles now and have had no problem. Since changing them I haven't experienced any rumble when turning at full lock at all.

The middle differential is very debatable since it uses a different fluid. Essentially Audi puts fluid with a little higher friction coefficient in it to make sure there no slipping. I have no idea how that would help though and haven't had any problems with the quattro system using the Redline for all three.

been running rediline 75w90 in all 3 of my nissan rear differentials for >10 yrs. very happy with it. haven't done the quattro yet, but probably would use the factory recommended friction modifier. I think i saw once where just the 'additive' could be bought, but may be remembering wrong.

It's not a regularly replaced consumable. $70 for a couple times in the life of a car isn't too bad. At least it's not like paying for those damn urea refills on new diesels.

Good to hear that it helps with Quattro rumble. Maybe I should hasten and priortize this bit of maintenance in my upcoming schedule. Come to think of it, I'm going to do 1 differential per week to see if there are individual effects. Will start with the rear, then front and finish off with the expensive stuff.
