    Front subframe/engine cradle interchangeable ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Does anyone know if our front subframes are interchangeable with an A5?
    I know it's interchangeable with a4s but found an a5 for 300.

Recently hit a pothole at 5mph, clipped the road and cracked the subframe so need to get this fixed asap.

Is the part number the same ? (probably stamped into the subframe somewhere....) or check EKTA parts catalog for S4 versus A5.

It seems like all the part numbers are the same, whether DSG or manual.
ECS does say that it's good for RS5 but it's manual? Don't recall rs5 in manual but I'm sure the fitment trickles down to the sub platforms of the rs5.

I'm taking it to a frame shop tomorrow to make sure no structural damage to the unibody (at 5 mph I can't see how) but it was a pretty good lick and it is a 4000lb car.

If I can avoid an insurance claim I'll just drop the subframe myself with a friend.
If there is unibody damage then I have no choice.

I'll update this thread for reference just in case anyone cracks their subframe.

Seems like all B8 subframes are interchangeable 4-8 cylinders a5 family and a4 family , manual or dsg.

These holes include different mounting points for different engine mounts on all b8 motors.

Hopefully you don't end up one day in this situation but also hopes this helps if you do.

It's been this way since the B5 platform. The subframe has the various mount points for the different engine configurations for the given platform

My 2011 B8 S4 subframe was bent (would not pass alignment after front left collision was repaired), and I was lucky enough to find one on a "limited quantity sale" (they had one left) at ECS Tuning, for $619 (it's now $1501). The ECS website page shows which models the part number 8T0399315G fits.

How much labor did you get charged to swap the subframe out?

Shops were giving me quotes of $400. I just did it with a friend.

Honestly, I wouldn't trust too many shops to do a job like that. Find a reputable shop.
Sorry to hear about your subframe

Yea very true. Did you just strap the motor for support or did you use a legit engine support?

The only DIY I've seen are on the B7, Saturn, and Jeep forums

Fortunate enough to use a engine cradle, you can probably improvise.
It's a sucky job if you're doing it by yourself, easiest part is removing, lining all the bolts up are a bitch.

    I used 034's motor mount for the b8 s4 as a reference
Ill try to break it down as far as I can remember.

Set the cradle, jack up the car on all 4.
Remove the front wheels, loosen sway bar link bolts and tie rod bolts.
Remove chassis brace, don't lose washers.
Loosen steering wheel collar from rack, loosen fluid lines from rack and unplug the connector.
Two bolts hold the steering rack in place, remove those and don't lose the washer.
Start loosening the engine mounts to subframe
From there I used a jack to hold the subframe and removed bolts evenly on both sides.

Like I said to get everything back is the worst part, even with help. I just threaded everything by hand, used an impact driver and tried to get everything evenly tight by feel.

As for special tools you'll need a few triple squares. Everything else you should have.

When my subframe was replaced a couple of months ago at the Audi dealer, the charge on the insurance documentation to remove and replace the subframe was $924.60. I believe that included replacing any single use stretch bolts, properly torquing all bolts to proper specs, etc. I believe they used special tools to support the engine/trans while the subframe gets switched out. This was all covered by the insurance company of the 22 Y/O girl who hit our car. Add another hundred something for the alignment on top of that. Glad it didn't come out of my pocket.

My regular shop (Brink Motorsports) is doing the work @ 5 hours for the engine cradle swap. Not bad. Insurance is covering & it's a 'no fault' claim - woOt!

While in there going to swap to 034 mounts. Just got new OEM ones if anyone's interested :-)
