Question Random stall and esp light came on

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Driving home from work today and the car randomly stalled and the esp light came on. It started back up right away (a little harder to start than normal) and the light was on for a few seconds then went off as I drove away. Car seemed fine for the rest of the day. Anybody else ever have a similar issue?

I did not get a check engine light, I checked for codes anyway and nothing came up. Car is an 02 1.8t 5spd 133,00 miles.

It did it again today. Random stall, esp light came on upon restarting the car and went off within 5 seconds and car was normal again. What should I check with the MAF? Or any other possible causes?

If you have VCDS, I'd do a full scan. To test the MAF you can simply unplug it while the car is idling. If the idle changes, that means the MAF is working. Otherwise, nothing else would happen, meaning the ECU is already using pre-defined values in replacement for the maf values.

You need to replace your crank position sensor, located just underneath the oil filter(1.8t). I had the same issue a couple months ago where my car would randomly stall out at a stop light, and upon restart(a bit more cranks that normal) the EPC light would be lit. Same thing happened cruising at freeway speeds. Follow the DIY below, easy/cheap fix. I personally had trouble getting my hex to sit on the bolt with the oil filter in place, so i'd recommend just doing an oil change at the same time, makes it a lot easier imo.

I will unplug the MAF and see what happens. I do not think its the crank sensor. The ESP light came on, not the EPC light. I changed the crank sensor once before and I had a cel and an epc light when it happened.

If you have VCDS scan the ABS module. It's more likely to store an intermittent MAF code because it uses it for traction control calculations.

So I disconnected the MAF harness and car sounded like it wanted to stall. Soulds like the MAF is working.

Any other idea's why the car would do this?

I'd also be looking into the ABS Control Module. They are prone to failure. It's the black electronic box that sits on the RHS of the ABS Module with the hydraulic lines coming out of it.

If you had VCDS it would probably throw the code (if the ABS Control Module is the issue):
    01316 - ABS Control Module
    49-10 - No Communications - Intermittent

When checking to see if this is actually the issue, be sure to disconnect the battery when plugging/unplugging the ABS control module as there have been some cases where they have failed due to voltage spikes.

If this happens to be the issue, make sure you get the right part number for the replacement module, the FWD and AWD code numbers are very similar.

How do I check the abs control module? And why would that cause a random stall? thanks
