    R8 2016 steering wheel for S6 C7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
First of all sorry for making the topic, but maybe it will help other too down the road.

So i bought this (secondhand) S6 C7 avant that i will be getting in the near future, but will post more about that later :).
Yes, after 7 years owning an A4 B8 avant 2.0tdi multitronic (car still for sale) i finally going for my dream and getting a 4.0 Biturbo (already stage 2 @575hp-800nm).

Since i modded my previous car, the modbug already bite me and recently i scored a brand new R8 2016 model steering wheel at imho very good price on ebay.
Came super carefully packed by the way (kudos for the seller).

    Guess some picture-porn:

It was sort of an impulse buy and i hadn't fully did my research (i also didn't expect the seller would except my bid).
Anyway, it came with this airbag

Maybe Alex (the king of steeringwheels/airbags) can jump in and tell me if this is single or dual stage and if this one will work in the S6 C7 11/2013 model (pre facelift) european car?
I'm affraid it won't but was prepared to take the risk...and sell airbag/source other airbag.
One way or the other, LOVING this wheel and still hope i will be able to mount and get it all to work properly in the car one day.

I've been told most of the buttons (the center ones) will work, except for the 'view' button (i suppose it is for switching screen modes on the dashdisplay of a MIB2 platform MMI)?
Hoping the drive select button will also work, same for the exhaust valve button.
The start/stop definatly won't work on the C7 but maybe i can tap into the wire and use it for something else (stinger VIP?)
Note the 'additional buttons' below the airbag are bolted on (addons).
There are at least 10 wires coming from the drive select and performance? buttons on the left (it has a printboard) going the the right printboard, exiting into a 3 wire to the main famous yellow plug.
If wanted i can dismantle the yellow plug and provide pin numbers so we maybe can trace back what buttons are pinned in what number.

Still will take some time before i actually can check the wheel out in my car, but hopefully untill then it is helpfull for others.

PS: did i mention i LOVE the steeringwheel :).

AFAIK, this isn't plug & play. I'm interested to see if you can figure out the programming.

Well maybe not fully plug & play (time will tell). From what i found on other site, this wheel works over the MIB2
platform. Afaik the C7 (prefacelift) works on MIB1 platform. The retrofitter guy mentioned MIB2 could be retrofitted, but i haven't asked yet what hardware modules are required for this.
*noticed on ebay.de several MIB2 modules pass by at decent prices (MMI MIB2 main unit, display and the touchepad unit = 1.500€ second hand for example). In my case it might be a justifed upgrade but atm not planned.
Anyway, just sharing the info i have for now.
Imho, even if only a few important buttons work for now i would be happy :).

I actually almost bid on that as well... But I did not..

The reason is because I realized that the airbag is designed to specifically work in an R8 and not an A6. Audi Engineers have spent countless man hours/years researching how that specific airbag should be deployed in each specific model.

My fear was that I would be able to get the R8 airbag to fit my A6, but when it came time to use it I was afraid that:
    1. it does not delpoy
    2. it deploys but snaps my neck.

Just my perspective.. It will look awesome regardless.

If we were able to run a cross reference on the airbag number and found that it was used in other flat bottom wheels, that could be encouraging, right? If its ONLY used in the R8, then yes, there could be some physics involved. I don't think deploy vs. non-deploy is a concern, as long as its wired properly. The risk is since its not plug-n-play, and the retrofit doesn't get the right wires hooked up. That would be a concern of mine, no doubt.

That wheel looks lovely. Hopefully, it might work. I have zero knowledge about retrofits but I would love to see it work in your car. And the start stop button. Rewiring it from the start stop in the stock location to the steering wheel might help? Again. I'm just shooting in the dark. Maybe some expert electrical guy might have an idea?

Are there any other numbers on the airbag?

I've tried to find the numbers on the picture, but they are not recognised.

The airbag info is here (ignore picture, it's illustrative only)

BTW - The airbag retaining mechanism (the two prongs with springs) looks very similar to the airbags found on the standard round wheels - lm wondering if a standard airbag from an S6 round wheel would fit?

just visually speaking (without doing any measurements), the r8 airbag looks considerably smaller in diameter to the C7 ones (round/flat bottom).

Standard airbag will definitely not fit. The steering wheel can be used in our cars but I think Alex@europrice mentioned that the controls might not work. Obviously the ignition button, drive select, etc. will not work but I think you can remove it. Someone else had bought it as well and posted in this forum in which Alex mentioned it all.

The OP should test fit it and see if the other buttons work (nav, view, etc.). I would love to put one of these steering wheels in my car as well without the extra R8 stuff.

@schanyc: indeed, smaller diameter....on the other hand, and not sure if safe, but wondering if you could remove the 'horn cap' and transfer it onto the s6 airbag?
@RAF_S7: afair s6 used complete different retaining plate for airbag then the r8. But that could be swapped maybe....
@street nasty: i think i posted it in other topic, but the r8 wheel has been integrated on the c7 platform already by a guy called fredles flc, a malysian guy. Apperently coding only to fix the start/stop.
Drive select aswell (but needs facelift drive select module), flaps maybe with 'signal capture' module....since it didn't provide a fix for the airbag yet (beside disable it with resistors) i didn't wanted to poop up the money he asked for the coding.

Several people still looking into other options atm (signal converting chips)....time will tell :).

Soft revive of my old topic...
After 2 year of finding someone honest and skilled to custom code the steeringwheel, finally a local friend and vcds guru and his team are starting to make good progress :). No full footage to be shown and will still take a month before i can finally be a testmule for the C7 platform but so far so good and they are aiming for several platforms. All self developed...
Anyway, more info in the very near future ;) (i'm excited!).

It super sucks as as far as coding goes we got it all covered and tested. It just is a hardware issue we need to overcome.
Sadely altought i know at least 3 or more other teams around europe are working on it with results, once you start asking about custom coding or wishes (especially for the 4 custom buttons) they go quiet. All protect their software (normal) but tgat means a customer cant adjust himself even if you know what the codes need to be etc...so pointless to buy one piece of hardware if you cant expand or customise it.
Still some hope here as they going different route now but still only a private/afterworks project for them.

    ...finally some worthfull updates :)...
The guys finally had succes getting their custom from zero selfbuild design to work! Still some finetuning and adjustments to be done but all basic buttons are working including the start/stop. Exhaust buttons just needs some propper recoding (canbus coding with timer counter), same for drive select although plans are on my car to let it behave as gearbox mode toggle swtich. Race button/switch will controle the FIS mmi module (and is basicly covered aswell).
Still need to order an dual stage leather airbag to make it all safe and plug&play.
Kit is still in development and the guys plan to make it as user friendly and plug&play possible so anybody can do the install itself + individual custom ordered coding.

Only update i can give is...mine still working flawless :).
The guys still in buisness and selling decent globally, feel free to contact them at https://www.ambrace.eu/
*exhaust button now works over custom canbus message instead on hardwiring and using the cete esp function (cete module is still required, cete simply upgraded their firmware to accept custom canbus specificly for activating the exhaust).
*still need to be tested (was super bussy and other priorities atm) but soon will try out the custom canbus codes John provided to controle the ds1 map switching over "race" toggle button.

I'm looking at a 2020 R8 steering wheel for my 2018 S6. I really think this mode changes the interior completely like it when I heavily modded and replaced the steering wheel in my A4.

    Edit:
Wow, this was so long ago. The company link is in the thread and will search if anyone else is interested.

It sure does change the look of interior a lot but definatly doesn't fight, been enjoying it several years :).
I don't know that company but almost sure non other then ambrace.eu can deliver a true plug and play, safe and reliable kit. Maybe Alex@europrice can supply they kit aswell (i know he started to work with them some time ago but didn't followed much lately).
