Can BHF valve guides be replaced?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,
I measured my valve stem/guide wear and it's well out - e.g. 1-1.5mm egg. The manual says that the guides cannot be replaced but I've seen a couple of threads on here with folks discussing replacing the guides e.g. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...9-jhm-hd-heads
Can the guides be replaced with off-the-shelf guides? Obviously anything can ultimately be machined but I wanted to check whether these heads can/are routinely have the guides replaced?
I'm aware that JHM do it per their website but wanted to double-check that this is a capability that other shops have done and with off-the-shelf guides.
I'm also assuming that the valves will also need replacing but the manual doesn't give the specs for the valve stem for me to check.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Thanks, would you mind sharing the quote range, and what parts does that cover (I'm assuming 40 new guides)

I have a hard time believing that pricing considering there is like $400 worth in guides alone from IE

I got my guides for 4 bucks a piece. Same material as oem. My heads were rebuilt and my valves and seats were cut. They claimed there wasn't much or a margin but my engine had great leak down results afterwards.

i was quoted $1300 to replace guides, seats and lap the valves, this is for both heads. i was also quoted $650 to just do valve seals and lap valves.

Thanks. That price includes guides and seats, along with the labor and machining. That's about the upper end of what my local shop is guesstimating. Going in to see him Friday with the heads. Found out that he does all the local work for the Audi and BMW dealers and independents.
I'm going to pull a piston or two and inspect the rings - once I've done that and am happy with it, then I'll fix this engine.

By the way, does anyone know how to get the quantities for all the fasteners (other than counting what came off the engine)? I'm really surprised that the parts manual does not list quantities - makes it danged hard to order the right number without a laborious count-up. It would be awesome if there was a rebuild list for each component that came off showing what fasteners need to be replaced and the quantity for each.

it is possibly that he is replacing valves too in that upper quote, that would be pretty close... these heads are not easy to work on and can get pricey

i had a friend mech shop (euros) get mine done at the local machine shop that he used, and may have gotten a discount...
mine was drilled and inserted new guides and of course seals, re-used all valves and springs, etc. triple grind and fresh cut $600 for the pair

Shop has replaced the guides. I dropped off the new valve guide seals today and he's going to fit them - all up, clean, guides, grind, reassemble $850 for the pair. Trying to decide whether I'm going to pull one or two pistons to see if the rings are sticking.
