5 days after purchase...in the shop

Just purchased a pre-owned S4 form my local audi dealer. 5 days later on the way home my A/C wouldn't get cold and then my temp gauge went through the roof. Limped home stopping every 2-3 minutes, let the car cool and then drive for 3-5 minutes as the temp climbed up again.

I assume its the thermostat, I'll find out tomorrow. At least the dealer agreed to give me a loaner despite there policy to not issue loaners to pre-owned repairs.

Yup just the thermostat. Had the same thing happen to me when I purchased my 2012 S4 with only 23K on her. Barely made it to the first off ramp before the temps climbed through the roof. Called the dealer, they flat bedded it to the Audi dealer across the street and then gave me a loaner, they handled it. Sucked for the dealer cause I drove two hours to get to them and told them once they fix it they can deliver my car back to me and then they can have their loaner back. Took them a week.

Is the Thermostat issue more of a B8 problem or did it carry over to the B8.5?

Did you get the message "PULL OVER AND TURN OF ENGINE NOW!"? I got that message when my tstat died. Not a happy message to get. I couldn't help but read it in Jezza's German-imitation voice.

Thats a new one for me, I have a 2013 CPO and part of the CPO is getting a loaner anytime the car is in the dealer.

Might want to check up on that.........

Same for me - 2014 CPO and the dealer has always given me a loaner on questions asked (I didn't purchase from them either).

OP just said pre-owned, not sure if it was CPO in order to get a loaner everytime. But I'd hate having an issue like that and not getting a loaner. My TSTAT also went out like this. I think I was at 39k.

I'm surprised dealerships are selling pre-owned B8's without updated T-Stats...
You should get a free loaner from the dealership you bought the car - heck from any Audi dealership... you bought an Audi and should expect that level of service...

It's definitely more a problem in the B8. Has anyone gotten this replaced before it's failed so it doesn't inconveniently fail on you like it seems like it does for most people (i.e. random driving, driving to work, etc.). Just curious if dealers are willing to replace this before it fails. I guess it could depend on the relationship you have with the dealer/SA.

    Yes.
There's a fuel rail recall on the B8 (11's and 12's perhaps some 13's also) and they are pro-actively replacing the thermostats at the same time... Mine was done last year.

To replace before failure but with knowledge of failure, wouldn't that be considered a recall?

My VIN wasnt on the list for the fuel rail recall, guess I'll have to call the dealer and ask about the thermostat.

I don't see how it can only be a B8 problem if people have reported them failing a second time after replacement? The updated thermostat part # is the same for all years. 06E121111AL. I think that all years are susceptible, with the B8s just being more prone to earlier failure. Bottom line: be prepared for it to happen sometime during ownership.

It is a problem for all years, and even the newer revision of the thermostat will fail. All the thermostats are plastic, they never changed that. It is the waterpump that changed from a plastic to a metal body, after 2010.
