Swapping to (Canadian) Colour DIS Cluster

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Evening gents,

Please forgive my new-ness on the forum and perhaps getting the most out of the search feature, however I have not been able to find a solid answer using that method.

    I'm attempting to swap the red dis cluster in my 04 b6 1.8USP to a colour cluster.. and from what I've been able able to gather through research I have one of two options;
    1. B6 S4 cluster w/ swapped faces and a re-calibration to scale correctly on the tacho + speedo
    2. B6 A4 3.0 colour DIS

I decided to go with option two, and though I'd be in luck when I found such a cluster locally.
Took it to a mate to get installed, and we managed to get everything to work minus the speedo.. and regardless of what we tried it just didn't want to play along.

After some lengthy head scratching and an email to Tom@Speedo Solutions I was able to find out that this cluster P/N 8E0 920 930KX is a older 02 model that gets it's info via pulse, as opposed to the 03+ which get it via CANbus.
So that basically leaves me SOL with this cluster.

After you've read through my wall of text.. here's my question: Has anyone found or does anyone know what the part number I should be looking at for the CANbus version (m/y 03+) of the Canadian b6 colour cluster?

Tom informed me that the part numbers (as far as US clusters are concerned) that would fall under that criteria are 981B/BX or 981E/EX, however I'm trying to find the Canadian version to avoid the mess with the cluster faces not being native Kph as opposed to Mph+kph.

At the end of the day I imagine I'll have to get the boys over at Speedosolutions to modify a b6s4 cluster into what I need, I just figured I'd try to see if anyone had any information before I went that route.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

p.s. If you're on here and reading this Tom, you're a legend and I appreciate your help.

You were pretty luck to find a Non-S4 color cluster- they are extremely rare. You'll probably have to look a very long time to find a later version non-S4 color cluster. Truth is you can buy any B6-S4 cluster and swap the faces. I'm pretty sure the clusters are more-or-less identical other than the faces. I do know that the cut-out for the square DIS opening for the non-color cluster is just barely a mm or so smaller than the color gauge.
And the Color cluster has white LED as opposed to red.
You can use a US cluster and recode it to Euro/ Canada or whatever and swap the faces you have and everything will work fine and line up. So, best bet would be to find a normal S4 cluster, swap the gauge faces around between clusters and sell the EARLY Non-S4 color cluster you end up with to someone with an early-vin car who can't find the right one. They can always swap the faces from their cluster if they want it in MPH.

Why not just install a full 04/05 S4 cluster? Why swap faces? Tom can do it all for you. Lots of S4's parted out in Canada.

    rollerton,

I didn't realize these non s4 colour clusters were that rare, but I guess given they only came on 3.0 A4s it shouldn't surprise me that much.
Realized I'd likely have to end up going the route of adjusting a b6s4 cluster to fit my needs, just thought it was worth a shot asking (mainly due to the fuss of shipping things back and forth across the border and dealing with our less than spectacular dollar exchange rate).
Regardless, thanks for the input and the heads up regarding the smaller dis cutout on the non colour clusters - had no idea about that detail.

    jesse500,

Honestly not a huge fan of having the s4 logo on the cluster, like the red needle look more, and the whole speedo range being greater on the s4 than the a4 cluster (in the grand scheme of things not giant issues, just personal preference).

That said, at this point I'll have to figure out whether I'm comfortable swapping the faces on my own or just sending my old cluster to Tom to have him do it.

Then Why not get a 2003-2005 A4 3.0 cluster? Color info screen, same faces/needles you currently have.

That's what I was hoping to find with the initial post, some part numbers so I can find a cluster from that range.

Unfortunately the idea that they're rare to find and it's likely easier to modify a s4 cluster seems to be reinforcing itself.

(Already been trying to find clusters using the US part numbers Tom had mentioned with no luck, but he also mentioned they were rare to find used)
