    ECU replace

So in the process of trying to figure out why my ride keeps going into limp mode the mechanic replaced the ECU. When I brought it down and dropped it off I only left the 1 key. They said they replaced the ECU and reprogrammed the key to it and that it didn't fix anything. This was maybe a year ago. Flash forward to today when I had left my key at a friends house. I used the spare key that wasn't with the car when the ECU got replaced and couldn't have been reprogrammed yet it still worked to start the car. Is this normal? From what I understand it shouldn't have been able to start the car, am I right?
