How far does depreciation go after mods

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So here is my dilemma. I have a 2014 s4 with 21k miles, white with red and black interior with every option save active cruise. It is CPO with the only mods done are a rs grill and clear bra. My question is if I go stage 2 how much would the value drop as I have pretty much voided the 100k drivetrain. I usually only keep a car about a year or so and was not sure if it would suffer significantly. If I were to sell now, as is compared to stage 2 what would the price difference be? Thanks for the input!

VERY subjective. some people will pay for mods, some think it lowers the value. Regarding the warranty, the catch is if the dealer network has it listed as TD1. if the dealer does not have it listed as TD1 and you are flashed back to stock mapping, then there "shouldn't" be any depreciation added. but someone would call BS and say it's not their thing.

i honestly don't think it is a question of depreciation, but more of a limiting your buyer pool. unless you are trading in, if that is the case then there is no telling.

Your warranty wouldn't be automatically voided. Only if Audi knew you had been tuned. Just flash back to stock before going into a dealer and you should be fine. I don't think mods will affect depreciation, but they won't increase value either

^^ This. Mods generally cause you to take a hit for the most part. Some will pay for them but the irony is most of us who mod cars don't want one that has been. I know I don't.

Exactly. It's mainly just a cost to you. I agree, I wouldn't want a car that I knew was modded unless I know it was very well taken care of. I think I've seen quite a few threads on here where people got cars used not knowing they were tuned and got flagged for it

Agree. And the pool for a car with the specific mods you have made is going to be an order of magnitude smaller than for the equivalent stock car.

As said above, if you can avoid getting flagged and go back to stock before selling it, there should be no impact. Not sure if a dealer would look at the flash count on taking a trade though.

Sorry for the ignorance, but don't most Stage 2 upgrades involve a pulley swap? If so, that could be a real pain to deal with if you have a failure and need to go in for service. In theory you could reflash your car on the side of the highway while waiting for a tow. But also completing a pulley swap in that situation would be... impressive.

I actually thought about this exact scenario. worse case you get towed to a local shop first, or home if you can or want to do it yourself, get the pulley changed, then towed to the dealer.

Is there a way to check if our car was tagged "TD1"?

If I were to sell my car as is now what would be a reasonable price to sell? Thanks for all the responses

In my opinion if you plan on switching the car in a year save your money and invest it into a car you plan on keeping. I'm not sure of all the work that goes into a stage two but I'm sure it's more money then just a flash. If you sell it there is a chance you won't get what you put into it to break even. And to tow the car back to the house to swap out the pulley and then tie to the dealer sounds like more work than you would want to do idk. That's just my opinion. But I will say your car looks bad ass and I wouldn't switch it up. I would mod the hell out of it and keep it. The white is serious. Good luck.

You could go stage 1/1+, then it's just plugging into the ODB port. Stage 2 requires some physical changes but if you're only planning on keeping the car for a year then what's the point?

As long as you have all original parts and it isn't TD1'd, the dealer will be able to CPO it. If you don't, they can't CPO it, and the value will drop.

FYI Dealerships can remove the TD1 flag at trade in if they're willing to pay for it.

As a dealer, I see modded cars come in all the time. I just tell the customer to return it back to stock and we'll pay them what it's worth. You won't get any less for the vehicle so long as the mods haven't caused the car to have issues, no TD1 and again the car must be returned back to stock.

The amount of value that it will depreciate (if any), would be less than the value of the pleasure you will get out of driving your "improved" vehicle.
See below what my uncle H always says... go enjoy life... a couple grand here or there is not worth worrying about.

This is the great thing...for some...
a friend of mine picked up an A4, and they simply flashed it back to stock. When I was looking around under the hood I saw a logo I recognize well. Hmmmm...

$100 later he finds out he bought he has a K04'd A4 /w stock exhaust (this was put back as well), exactly what he was going to be doing with it and saved huge on buying the mods
