Can the 1.8t awm vvt be used for power instead of emissions

Pretty much would like to know if the vvt can be altered to work like Hondas v tech instead of an emissions assistance. Thank you

VVT is not an emission component. It's an ignition timing component. Variable Valve Timing.

Yes but in the 1.8t the vvt is used to control emission instead of producing more power

I believe that thread is innaccurate. The combination valve and secondary air injection is for emissions. VVT is for power.

Cam phasing advances or retards valve lift events by rotating the camshaft, typically over a range of about 60 degrees relative to the crankshaft angle. Let's say our intake valve normally opens 5 crankshaft degrees before top dead center and closes 185 crankshaft degrees after top dead center (5 degrees after bottom dead center). "Retarding" valve timing by 10 degrees means the valve opens and closes 10 degrees later, that is, it opens 5 degrees after top dead center and closes 195 degrees after top dead center. By retarding the camshaft’s timing, the engine achieves better high RPM torque, whereas advancing the intake camshaft’s timing produces better power at low RPM.

VVT on the 1.8t is used for both power and emissions. I've spent a fair bit of time reading and checking maps in different files.

For example my 2002 Jetta (032HS) doesn't use VVT for power at all. The cam state map (KFNWSE) is the same value across the board. It is used in other maps like the one for Cat warm up (KFNWKHLLE) however.

For the B6 1.8t (518AK ECU) VVT is used for power unlike the Jetta. The cam is advanced at lower RPM and then retarded at higher RPM via the KFNWSE map. Its exactly like Seerlah wrote above, better power down low then better torque up high.

I don't have an AWM bin or definition to be able to say if it does or doesn't use it stock. However, if it doesn't you can certainly use it for power if you can find and modify KFNWSE. Maestro gives you access to that map I believe. Advance until 4000-4200 RPM or so, then back to normal should work for you. I read of guys getting spool on BT setups 200-300 RPM sooner as a bonus.

If you do it, just keep in mind there are two timing maps in ME7.5 with VVT, one for cam advanced and the other at rest. You have to match them up at the cross over point to get a smooth timing transition.

TL;DR: Yes OP you can use VVT for power. Use the KFNWSE map to advance the cam if and when you want to....

    Thank you both of you
