Intermittent Starting issues 99 Avant 3.0

Experiencing some intermittent problems when starting my 99 A6 Avant 2.8. Sometimes it starts fine, warm or cold, other times it turns over quite a bit before it will fire up. Also, there are the times it starts, and stumbles for 5-10 seconds before smoothing out, not to mention 60% of the time it starts as if it was brand new. Can't determine a pattern, as it happens when the car has sat, after I've driven 5 miles, 100 miles, turned of and started right back up, hot, warm or cold etc etc... Want to start troubleshooting a bit because when it does happen, I think this is it, she's not going to start.....

Hook up a scanner and check coolant temp sensor. When enginenisndead cold it should be the same as the idle air temp.
