Transmission Getting stuck in certain gears

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
When im driving my B8 around im noticing that my transmission is getting stuck ins 2nd and 3rd gear. The revs sometimes go up all the way to 4k RPM before shifting up (and this is with normal driving). Also if im driving downhill ive noticed that my car likes to downshift and bring the revs pretty high. Am I having an issue with my tranny or no . Im out of warranty on my car, so the dealership is out of the question. Thanks guys

Dealership transmission software update will likely solve that issue. Not uncommon with the 6AT, although when I had mine it was usually first gear which would hold.

YMMV. Mine was under warranty but it probably depends on your relationship with the dealer and whether or not that update is a TSB. Either way it only takes about 15 minutes so even if they charge their hourly rate it won't be that bad.

I really dislike my dealer. I usually go to the one in Miramar cuz its the closest but they charge me for EVERYTHING and lie to me go to them and charge me so much money... I called to get my "Service Due" interval reset and wanted the charge me $65 for it..

They should be emailing you a survey after every service visit... AoA mandates it.

Never gotten a survey... I bought my car used and the previous owner had purchased extended warranty for 100k miles. So back in september my passanger door wouldn't lock anymore. It was at 92k at the time. I called the dealership and they said i would be covered. I drove there and talked to manny and he confirmed that ill be covered under warranty. they did the diagnosis and everything and my car was also leaking engine oil. so i got a call saying that since i didnt purchase warranty, then I would have to pay $1600 for both repairs. And if i wanted to opt out i would have to pay 2 diagnosing fees and the loaner car for a week. So i was kinda forced to pay. luckily my dad helped me with the repair costs. im still paying off his card that we charged... and on top of that, I never got a survey lol

Yeah, I go to the Auto Gallery and my SA ALWAYS calls me after, asking how my experience was and reminds me to fill out the survey.

Maybe find yourself a competent local indie and stop taking the car to the dealer if you have no warranty coverage. Indie won't be able to do the transmission update though I don't think.

^ that's how it should be. Varies hugely by dealer, though. Sorry you've had shitty experiences Nathan, but it sounds like Jaryd's suggestion is the way to go.

Yeah I've been looking for a good and reliable shop around me. Only reason I went there was because they told me I'd be covered.

Very occasionally my car will hold 2nd gear for way too long. I've always noticed before it gets to redline and manually shifted to 3rd myself. I'm not sure what would happen if I didn't, I'm assuming it would eventually shift at redline. There is a technical service bulletin for this problem TSB# 2029808. It says to update the transmission control module software. It only mentions the car holding 2nd gear though. Since your car holds 3rd sometimes, i suppose it could be something else.

The downshifting down hills seems to be a feature to help keep you from riding the brakes. I've noticed on mine if you ride the brakes to maintain speed, it will start downshifting. If you still ride the brakes, it'll downshift another couple more times after a few seconds each. If you're on a steep enough & long enough hill, the revs can get pretty high. I'd say that that is probably normal.

If you are going to get the software updated, there is a change they will charge you a diagnostic fee and then the labor to update. I went in once because my side assist light was coming on incorrectly, and the TSB said to update the software. I explained the problem and said I'd like to get my software updated to see if it fixes it. He said they would have to diagnose the problem and determine if that is the correct fix first. So in hindsight I should have tried going in and not mentioning any problem at all, and just said I want my side assist software updated. (not sure if that would have had a different end result)

now that you mention it, my car does downshift when im riding the brakes. as for the part where it gets stuck in gears; i dont plan on going to the dealership for this lmao. ill just live with it i guess.

I didn't read through the posts, but there is a software update that Audi covers. Take it in, it's a known issue that's easily resolved.

Either pay small now or pay bigger later. I dont know if Pure Motorsports which is around corner of Audi of San Deigo can do it, i would call them and see what they say.

I don't know if Indy shops can do these OE software updates. I'd call another dealership near you to see if they'll do the update free... Give them your VIN, tell them you're aware that there's a service bulletin about this, and ask if they'll perform it. TSBs should be handled by the dealer for free.

The next dealer is 2 hours away from me, Mission Veijo. I dont get why miramar wont cut me some slack, the car has been serviced there since it was brand new. everything from oil changes, to turbo replacement.

Audi of San Diego has been good to work with, i never had any issues with them. I got my oil consumption fixed out of warranty by them with no issues plus got a loaner. didnt pay a cent. Mission Viejo is good also, I only bought a car from them never got my car serviced.

My local dealer charges 125/ item in question, unless it's under warranty. If it's a quick fix I usually end up paying about 60, if it's an engine issue its typically between 500-1000.

As for the long shift period, my old b7 used to do that in 2-3 so I drove in tip full time for about a month then it seemed to fix itself and shifted normally after that

I found that just a simple adaptations reset in VCDS solved this issue for me. Worth a try if you have access to or someone with a cable.
