    JHM Shifter Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

Im looking for some feedback from those of you that have the JHM shifter installed. Mine was installed but I am not sure it was adjusted correctly.

    1. Any pictures showing how its sitting? Stock Knobs, or after market, measurements would be really helpful.

    2. Does it make a loud metal on metal noise on reverse to 1st gear, when the shifter pops up? I also hear metallic noise when shifting aggressivley.. Was something supposed to be greased? I am using softest spring

    3. Which spring are you using? Pro's/Con's?

Its really hard for me to get the shop so I am going to try to adjust it myself. I like the "feel" of the shifts, but having that loud metal noise makes it seem very cheap especially when I have passengers.

Any sound clips? I drove an b8s4 with the JHM shifter and it felt really metal on metal to me also.

I do not have the JHM shifter so I may be talking out of turn here, but I do have the Eurocode shifter and installed it myself so I am familiar with the construction in general. The first thing I notice when looking at a photo of the JHM unit is that the spring seats (or collars) at both ends of the reverse spring are metal, whereas the stock unit has plastic collars on either side. I believe the metal to metal sound you hear when the shifter pops out of reverse into neutral is due to the all metal construction of the spring collars. My Eurocode shifter reuses the upper white plastic collar/ spring retainer piece from the stock shifter and makes an audible clicking sound when popping from reverse into neutral, but not a metal on metal sound.

I cannot tell if there is any non-metal material between the shift lever and the linkage. The photos make it look like a metal to metal connection - meanwhile, both the Eurocode and ECS offerings have a plastic type material at this interface which I believe acts to reduce friction and provide some cushioning to the shifter feel.

The shift knob is HEAVY. Im sure the heavier spring will help, but honestly If its going to make this noise I probably going to get over it pretty quick.

Any thoughts on a solution? Some felt pads inbetween? Lather it in white grease?

No offense to JHM this thing is SOLID piece of engineering. But "solid feel" doesnt help with it clanking around.

We include a cup of grease for the shifter so yes.

You should switch to the medium spring like I had recommended the other day. (the soft spring is the same spring rate a OEM, and with a heavier solid shifter it can be too soft for some people and can lead to the clanking you are referring to)

Here is the installation video I recommended to you last time we talked.
