    Tial 605's

I've done a lot of searching, and just looking for some specifics.

What is Tials warranty on these? I know they specify a max pressure of 28psi due to the journal bearing, even though the wheels are the same as the 770's.

Has anyone with the 605's pushed them to say, 35psi, for any length of time?

I ask, because there are plenty of journal bearing turbos out there functioning at high pressures. So I'm wondering if there is more to this than warranty specifications. Just not sure if I can justify an extra $1500+ for a ball bearing setup. (Not questioning the benefits of BB>journal.)

Also, has anyone needed to have their 605's rebuilt? If so, cost?

    Specifically talking the 605.2 here.

Tim (Corbett) is the resident B5 Tial expert. I'm sure he'll chime in.

There is a brand new 770 kit on facebook for $3500, installed but never had the engine started iirc. Just an FYI

There's been a few 605 kits that saw over 30 psi... how long things hold past the design spec is anyone's guess and you certainly won't get an answer on here (or anywhere really) about that.

JB turbos can do high boost, but remember that big boost on small turbo frames/shafts isn't the same as big boost on JB turbos that have large shafts/frames.

turbonerd has done exactly what you are asking about, not sure if it was his car or just one he worked on/built.

Was that just for one turbo or both and how many miles did they last you? I'm considering these for a stock block build or PJ borgwarner k04. Not looking for maximum power just reliability.

Yea at that price point I will probably just end up going with rods and push a set of 605's once the warranty is up.

My car won't be a DD at that point, so if they break, oh well. The extra $1500 could go towards the rods and other goodies.

I pretty much got the answer I was looking for. I get the feeling the 605's should be able to get me as far as I want to with the 2.7.

We pushed Tims 605.2's to 35psi for roughly 11k miles until they let go. We also had a boost leak at one of he injectors forever that couldn't be fixed, so I think that had a small portion of the issue too.

    This.

They also raced everything on the planet with that car. Drop in rods, 605.2's, and e85 was a solid combo for street racing. This year should they have a new set up that's going to be even faster.

770 with 35psi on 2.7t and hundreds of pulls on them. If you're really looking for DDing a car where reliability is the key, then splurge and get BB turbo. You do need rods though.

Yea I'll be freshening up the whole engine. It won't be a DD at that point though, which is why I'm considering the 605's over the 770's. When the motor comes back out it is to become a strictly fun car.

That $1500 or so saved could get me rods and everything I need to reseal/re-ring.

I blew my 605.1's ~12,000 miles or just over a year. I did 10 road course events until one of them popped at Sebring, max 26psi. I think excessive heat was the main culprit....Sebring during the summer is brutal! Tial rebuilt them for $900, I believe they do have a one year warranty of some sort but I didn't qualify.

Fwiw, the move from v1 to v2 brought a larger journal bearing and 360 deg vs 270 deg thrust bearing.

Haha if blowing up and installing tials makes me an expert then I guess so lol.

We ran 605.2s for a few months at 35psi. Had a hole in my intake manifold I could never find like a hairline crack. Caused a decent boost leak and running them at 35psi caused them to over spin.

Moved on to 770s with Xona rotor centers. Blew those as well, not sure why but Tial has assured me they have solved that issue whatever it was. Have new set on and engine ready to go back in. Let you guys know how they hold up I guess.

Also have a set of Tial 880s with Xona centers going in my rs6.

880's thats interesting. Would like to know more about them. What kind of power level are you shooting for with the rs6?

It's just a larger comp cover and larger wheel. Not much bigger but should help. No idea on power goals. Let you know when it's done though

I have 8k on my 605.2s... had to pay for a rebuild of a cartridge and it was only $500.

Boy I would have thought you guys were getting more miles out of these things considering what they cost. 10-12k miles isn't great.

I'm running 27psi on SRM K24/RS6, it'll be interesting to see how many miles I get out of these.

Aside from the 605.1's mentioned earlier, the failures listed are high pressure... Not reading back through I think we've only seen 2 cases of failures listed.

    27psi is a far cry from 35psi.
