Just removed my exhaust resonator...whole new exhaust experience!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I just came back from my local muffler/welding shop after having my OEM Sports Exhaust resonator removed and boy is there a difference! I decided to go with straight through pipes over the X or H bend options. After firing it up for the first time I thought DAMN!, this mug is loud!, there was a little popping and backfiring going on and I was really worried I went the wrong route with straight pipes over X/H, but after I got it out on the street I have to say it sounds awesome! No backfiring or popping when you get on it, just a mean mean tone and grumble at take off, once you level out at cruising speed it almost feels like it's not even there, then when you dump on the accelerator your quickly reminded that the resonator is gone. Some people have complained about exhaust drone noise but I have to say it's not bad AT ALL! IMHO, I will say that this option is not for the faint of heart, for you guys out there that don't want the big growl I would go with an X or H bend. Overall I would say that I'm extremely happy with my choice and at $200 out the door cost I'm even more happy! Please don't mind the crappy phone vids and pics.

+1, the suitcase muffler delete is great. Bonus that it's cheap.

This is awesome!!! I wanted to do this from the gate when I saw other members doing it but then told on here that you couldn't do it on a 2016 because of the different exhaust for C7.5. So basically do I just need an exhaust shop to cut out the suitcase muffler and weld straight pipes in? Or have them put an X pipe in for not as loud as straight? the X pipe or H bend would probably be more expensive, (just a guess)

Any fly by videos or in car? I would really be interested in seeing those.

    Thanks,

sounds good, for some reason the left exhaust tips look a bit lower.

Yes, all you will need is an exhaust shop to cut the resonator out, I kept my resonator so I could re-install it should I decide to sell/trade in the car. My exhaust guy said the X or H pipe would be a little more expensive but not much. The reason I decided to go with the straight through pipes is because I read on another forum that a guy with an S6 went with an X bend and said it wasn't much louder at all, for me it was a roll of the dice because I couldn't find anybody that went the straight pipe route with a '16 model but again, I'm extremely happy with the results. Some other food for thought is our exhaust breathes pretty well in stock form and this mod gives it more air without messing with down pipes which are more difficult to remove and replace. My ROC-EURO intake will be here soon which will complete the intake/exhaust package for me...then comes the ECU/TCU tune. One last thing I noticed is that in "Dynamic" I could hear a little exhaust drone while straight line driving, I found that I could actually semi regulate the drone in the car by keeping the car in "Individual" mode and the Exhaust Note in "Comfort" and the engine in "Dynamic". Bottom line: There are adjustments you can make to fix/suppress the drone. Who gives a $h@t about the exhaust being in "Dynamic" mode after you delete the resonator?, not this guy!

I'll try to post some fly by's tomorrow and add it to this thread. Cheers!

Wow, thanks for the info! Sounds like you and I have the same plans for our cars. I have Roc Euro on the way too, (well supposedly). I should do this resonator delete this weekend. If you could post an in car video or a fly by, that would be awesome!

Dude, it's funny because I purchased a Lily drone back in May of last year and I was supposed to have it in March of this year, I couldn't help but think that would of been the coolest fly by video...Unfortunately I still have no Lily Drone...WTF!, lol. I'll do a plain old normal drive by tomorrow and post it up.

The only problem now is, when your left hand exhaust valve closes, you are blocking the exhaust to one entire bank of the engine. The MY16 model has the exhaust valve in front of the left hand rear muffler. Without the center muffler, which was a crossflow design, the exhaust gases (that would normally have gone out the right hand exhaust), have no where to go. You will ultimately do damage, as this valve closes at higher RPM's in comfort mode and always in 4 cylinder mode.

I had a resonator removed, too. I got the AMG-like sound, but at the same time I lost the low-end torque. My 40-120mph has been slowed.

Now I am back to stock again. What about you?

So then to do it right you would need to do an X pipe?

That's funny, I asked my muffler guy who looked up the specs on our exhaust and he assuredly told me there wouldn't be. I'll have to do more research.

Update: well I have an appointment 1st thing tomorrow to get an X pipe put in. My wife today said she heard a hissing type noise, I told her she was crazy. FML, lol.

I haven't noticed any loss in power at all, just that strange hissing noise. I'd rather be safe than sorry so I'll be going the X-pipe route tomorrow. More pics to follow.

The hissing noise is the valve closed and the exhaust gases being forced around the outside of the valve, because they have no where else to go. You will need a H or X pipe fitted or you will have to disconnect the valve. Disconnecting the valve will affect the noise and smoothness of 4 cylinder mode and cause an error code, without a special adaptor.

Ok so do you think the sound would be about the same with the X or H pipe? Im going to do this mod but want the loudest possible sound, I'm guessing they would be the same.

A mod I've been hoping to try with my MY16 S6, is removing the left hand rear muffler or replacing it with a straight resonator. The tricky part is reproducing the exhaust tips, so they still look original. I made a thread about it here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...16-exhaust-mod

Awesome, great to know! I went to my guy today and he is an old school V8 muscle car guy, and he said that we should remove my mufflers and leave the resenator in place! I was like "whoa dude, I got kids and clients that sometimes go in my car" I had to slow him down a bit. I think I will just get the H pipe route as you did, can't wait to hear some fly bys.

    Good stuff!

Not sure if it applies, but fwiw: we tested all 3 on my SC'ed RS4 a couple years ago (3" front to back, catless at the time). Straight, H, and X. X won out in sound and power.

Nice job. I personally think the H is a better choice, as it doesn't force the two exhaust pulses together, and should be a little louder than the X.

Nice job. I personally think the H is a better choice, as it doesn't force the two exhaust pulses together, and should be a little louder than the X.
Thanks. I'm really happy with it and thank you again for your invaluable input.

Here's a short clip and my attempt at accentuating the exhaust.

Yeah these videos are making me mean towards doing this rather than a full exhaust. Would love an exterior clip and one showing any drive, if possible. Thank you for sharing!!

Shame some company don't make a pre made kit you can buy and do your self to remove that resonator.

Sounds really nice. Something I will surely consider. Only issue is when trading the car back in you have to go backwards and put the center res back in. So it really becomes twice as expensive as originally thought. But still far cheaper than a full exhaust no question.
