Question What would you pay for a spare (slightly damaged) rim?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My HRE FF01's arrived this week (new). I had them mounted at Discount Tire (as they had a Road Force balancer). They had their 'top tech' on it, and a 'freak' accident occurred where there was some damage done. The tech seemed genuinely pissed at himself, and the shop is doing the right thing and ordering me a new one directly from HRE. So I'm not railing against the shop or the tech.

BUT... Given Colorado roads are known for potholes, I did ask about buying the rim and they're game. From what I've read, the FF01's are fairly strong, but I thought it's be good to have a backup in case something un-repairable occurred.

So what should I ask for the rim? (19x9.5 - $600-650 retail) I'm assuming it would be $200 for a professional repair.

The red circle is the significant portion of the scratch, everything else is likely touch-up and buff.

Are you buying the rim they damaged? You should be getting that for free.. It's their problem not yours.

Seriously, how did it come to be where they were keeping your damaged wheel?

Since they're replacing the wheel for you, I dont think it should be free. I'm not sure what they would normally do in a situation like this after the damage a wheel, but it still has SOME value - especially since it was only cosmetic damage.

Decide what you'd be willing to pay for it, then have them offer first. I would say 50% of MSRP is probably fair considering you could consider it "used" with the damage. Getting wheels repaired can be hit or miss. My father has his OEM wheels repainted and they were flaking off within 6-10 months. Just something to consider. If you're running it as a spare, I almost wouldn't even invest the money to get it repaired.

Yea I'm confused. Did he buy the rims first, then take them to the shop to get mounted? If so, then the shop should be giving you money for the damaged rim, not the other way around.

I have a retail store.. If that happened in our shop they would be getting a new wheel. It's what any business should do. Or have them fix the wheel at thier cost and give to you. Regardless.. You shouldn't pay anything out of pocket..

You should get the damaged wheel back and a brand new wheel. I wouldn't settle for anything less. It would be different if you brought them used wheels and they damaged one. Then I would say then they can pay to fix it. But since it was brand new I would only settle for brand new and your wheel back.

you should have just worked it out in the first place that they take off 300, would have saved both parties more hassle.

    Sorry for not being clearer:
    1. I showed up with 4 new HRE wheels in boxes that I ordered myself online, delivered to my house.
    2. 40 min later, they let me know that the one wheel was damaged.
    3. They are ordering a new wheel direct from HRE - to be delivered today/tomorrow and will replace the damaged one with the new one for free.
    4. My out of pocket expense is $0 - outside of the 10 minute round trip to the shop and waiting for 4th wheel remount.

They didn't know what to do with the damaged rim - likely an ebay item (but unclear if a national chain does that.) I was hoping to leverage the situation, and help them recoup some of their expense as well.

Ah ok I see your point. OP arrives to tire shop with 4 brand new wheels, (they get him a brand new replacement), and he leaves with 4 brand new wheels. The 5th wheel is now just a bonus if he can get it for a good price.

I would assume in the time OP is waiting for the new wheel to arrive, he is driving on the current scratched wheel?

Edit: since I saw your new post OP, since they don't know what to do with the damaged wheel, have you asked about them just giving it to you first?

They are making you whole, no need for free anything, unless they are feeling overly charitable. If you feel like you can use a spare rim, it's just a matter of getting it for a price that is cost + repair < new. I think you'll have to get both repair quotes and new quotes (I assume you can find someone selling new for under retail, maybe).

    - Exactly!

I would assume in the time OP is waiting for the new wheel to arrive, he is driving on the current scratched wheel?
    - Indeed.

have you asked about them just giving it to you first?
    - I haven't. I just let them know I'd be interested in it as a spare. Unless they come at me with an amazing offer, I'll probably let them try to sell it, and see if they want to get back to me later. I don't see a ton of singles for sale online (and no cosmetically flawed ones.)

    Thanks for everyone's input...

I would ask the damaged rim at the cost to them.

meaning if the cost to them was $400, I would expect to pay $400.

At the end of the day you are getting your 4 wheels, albeit a bit of a problem, but at least you now know of a shop that would rather call up and admit they fucked up, right the accident vs a shop that would have just covered it up and hoped you wouldn't notice.

these guys seem like good, honest folks, make em a reasonable offer.

I had the same thing happen at a Discount Tire - they gave me cash to buy a new wheel and I kept the old... It only amounted to $250 though...
BTW - my wife's aftermarket wheel was also damaged at a Discount Tire last year... I will never take any vehicle or wheels there again. They don't take proper care similar to other volume type shops... they are good for the corolas and accords of the world.

I am coming to this conclusion as well. I was focused on finding a Hunter Road Force Balance location, and this one was close. I am having a hard time finding a good place to take my car where they're not going to screw something up...

Good advice. Guess I need to stop being lazy and drive the 30 minutes to the dealer... Would have been quicker at this point.

Gotcha. I would ask for it first. They have no use for it and might just give it to you since they screwed up and want to make you happy as possible. Who knows.. its worth a shot right?

Update: I had my brand new rim installed today. They offered me $200 for the damaged one. I showed them an EBAY listing for a perfect HRE FF01 rim for $300, and said l was thinking $100 (assuming $200 for repair.)

I walked out with the extra rim for $150. I'm ok with that, given I have an option if something goes very badly with a pothole...

So Kudos to Discount Tire for not screwing me over and doing the right thing, but I'm not going back. Hell, they probably don't want me coming back with $600 rims... They're out of pocket $350 + labor for doing my set. Not good for business.

Good work on getting the 5th rim.

As others have shared I've also had bad luck with Discount Tires.

Glad to hear they owned up to the mistake. Regardless, they don't get my business anymore.
