    Audi A6 C5 4.2 V8 Wide tyre install

I need to change my summer tyres and I am in love with wide wheels. Right now the car is with stock "Fat five" alloy wheels - 255/40/17. What I am thinking of is 285/40/17. :) Would they be too wide?
Maybe spacers will do the work if I buy 255 (15mm front and 20mm rear)? The car is with stock suspention.

They'll be too tall, a full 1" taller. Also, this is totally a question for general discussion; doesn't need to be here in the chatterbox.

i doubt 285 40 17 will fit on an 8 inch wide wheel. Even at a tire shop, they will say 255 40 17 is too big for a 17x8 wheel

255/40 is stock size for the 17x8 fat fives. You're going to need a wider rim for that size tire.

255 is out of manufacturer spec for most brands, but you could stuff it on an 8" wheel. If you get a 'normal' street tire you should run a higher PSI to avoid some of the impending sidewall rollover.

For a 285 you'd need a 9.5" wide wheel. If you're married to the fat fives you can get them widened to 9.5 and put 285s on, but I don't think those would fit in the arches without modification beyond rolling.
