    key fob help

    Hi
bought a used 2014 S5 and only received one key fob and the plastic key in the glove box with the holder.
Trying to get the other key but that's another story.
Car shows 3 keys registered in the MMI
The car starts with the key fob but if i take the fob in the house and try to start it with the plastic glove box key it wont start.
The plastic key will open and lock the glove box and door so its the right cut for the car.
If i take the plastic fob and put it in the slot i can hear clicking like its locking it down but the display says no key.
If i push it in the slot no start but if i push the valet fob it starts.
Key can only go in to the plastic fob one way so i know its right.
I tried closing all doors and still no start with the plastic fob.
Am i doing something wrong or did it loose its programing?
The plastic key looks like new not bent or cracked like it was in some ones wallet.
Oh while writing this i have another question does the plastic fob key even start the car or is it just a fancy plastic key holder
and if i have that plastic fob in my hand it wont unlock the door while holding the handle as well so i dont think its smart.

    Thanks

Was the car a CPO when you bought it, by chance? If it was, you can take it back to the dealership you bought it from and have them replace the missing key.

I was told that the plastic "wallet" key clips into the plastic holder from the glove box, and is supposed to be able to start the car. I've never actually tried it, but that's what the Audi dealer told me.

It was not a CPO and the dealer is trying to get the other key for me.
In my searching I see both and the dang owners manual is missing as well

just found the manual ill be taking it in to have them look at the plastic key

    – Open the glove box and take out the adapter for the spare
    key ⇒ fig. 33 -arrow-.
    – Insert the spare key ⇒ fig. 34 all the way into the adapter.
Please note that the key will only engage in one position.
    – Press the spare key lightly into the adapter until you hear
    it click into place.
    – Insert the adapter, spare key first, into the ignition lock.
You should now be able to start the engine in the usual

How did you attempt to start the car with the plastic emergency fob inserted? Did you push the fob in once after the unlock, or did you attempt to use the start button?

Scumbags. I freakin hate it when a dealer or someone at auction swipes one of the keys to make a few bucks on eBay. From my experience, well over half of used cars on auto lots are missing a key. Whenever I buy a used car, I wait until the deal is agreed upon, and when it is time to sign, I then remind them that I need to see 2 keys and 1 valet key. If not, they owe me $300 off the price.

LOL ya i feel ya i did get them to drop the price but that was before i found out about the key then they would not go further

i put the plastic key fob in the slot and pushed then is said there was no key
left it in and push the button and same warning
but if i take the smart key fob it starts the car with it in my hand, in the slot with button push or pushing it in the slot
also found out that if your fob battery dies you can still start the car with it in the slot pushing it in

    key fob help

Flash, do you actually have both parts of the plastic emergency key set from the glove box?

For clarity; and I think you understand this already...It's a two piece unit. The "key" part snaps into the "fob" part. The "key" part is what's programmed to the car; the "fob" part is merely a holder to fit in the dash slot while the "key" part is installed into it.

Without the two mated together you're not going to start the car by inserting it into the dashboard slot.

The plastic set in the glove box is your emergency key. The key part is intended to be kept at home, wallet, key safe etc.

If you're going to valet you lock your glovebox with the metal key from the primary fob and hand them just the fob, not the metal key.

Just an update on this issue
Went to the dealer today and had them check the keys, they were able to reprogram the plastic key and now it works as it should.
Put it in the plastic key fob push it in the slot and the car starts up.
I asked them how did it become unprogrammed and the tech told me that this was just a guess but there are modules for the trans and engine with security features
and probably what happen is that a module was swapped and there was only one key available at that time so they programed it to that key.
Sounds plausible I bought another key as well and my rear is still sore from that one but now i have 3 working keys.
any way my issue is resolved
    thanks for the help
