Warm Start Issues

Hi folks,

With the warmer weather here I've started experiencing a bizzare problem.
Cold starts are fine, no issues. Hot starts are fine, no issues.

But on specific warm starts the car will crank like a champ but will not attempt to turn over. I noticed a few things:

The CEL does not come on in accessory on a warm start, the headlight dipped error briefly flashes, and it won't show you oil temperature and it won't show any engine temp info. Here is a screenshot of the cluster, notice how the CEL and EPC lights are missing from accessory mode:



After waiting a while, it will usually start and the cluster will look normal in accessory:



Once it starts, however, the traction light, EPC and Brake light usually stay on. Sometimes the brake light beeps. Sometimes it even misfires and I have to turn it off and turn it back on and it runs fine, like nothing ever happened.

It's gotten to the point where I know when the car will start and when it won't. I can't take this thing anywhere without planning on a cooldown or leaving it running.

Can anyone shine some light on this?

I had a similar issue I chased down for awhile. I ended up replacing my 614 relays (2 or 3 of them IIRC) and I haven't had the problem come back yet...although I should put more miles on it before I can say with certainty that this solved the problem. Also, those 614 relays were replaced with a revised part (644).

I had similar symptoms a few years ago and it was suggested to me that it could be the crank positioning sensor. Before I had a chance to buy a new one it stopped doing it. I'll have to see if it comes back when the weather warms up.

Koolade9 you are the man. Did some research on the 614 and describes my issues exactly. Will look into changing and report back.

AWD Addict, the CEL would come on with the crank sensor. That or the CTS were my first two guesses!
