    CAI-ish

So I took some time to treat my leather and interior yesterday, then I did an engine bay detail.
Then I decided to clean my k&n drop in and things got a little out of hand .
I decided I wanted to figure out a little better free flowing intake without spending a ton of money and without doing anything irreversable.
First let me say that on an intercooler car I do not believe in CAI. Your intercoolers can only get the iat to a certain temp(ambient), regardless of the air they are pulling through, unless that air is ridiculously hot, then they will heat soak. Or you have an intercooler Mister, using water or a high flash point alcohol, such as methanol. In short a CAI is a waste if you're buying it just for cooling purposes, and you are intercooled.
    On to the business...
I removed the stock air box, cleaned it up, then I remembered that I had an old air raid filter from a truck. I pulled it out, cleaned it up and it ended up being a perfect fit for my idea. I wanted to keep the stock under-hood air scoop, to bring fresh cool air to the filter, and I needed a heat shield so I grabbed the one off the old air box, it fit perfectly. I put two slight notches on the old air box shell and pressed the heat shield in to them, I then slightly bent the heat shield to fit right over the manifold. I took this for a spirited drive and it never came loose or fell off. So I think I have a winning design. Everything is reversible back to stock. And you'd never know it was messed with. Which is what I wanted. If anyone wants the part number for this filter let me know. I will be posting pictures shortly.

    That's the ish part ;)

No you are correct, I made the mistake of labeling this thread CAI. I have seen far too many threads get heated over the HAI vs CAI labeling debate in my years as an auto enthusiast. I merely just used the term as a catch all.... I dont think the air going in is much cooler, maybe even hotter now than stock. But I also believe that the intercoolers can make up for that. I will have to do some data logging to really justify it at all.

Sounds good. I did on mine and it never went above 40oC.

Okay, just did some logging and here is my numbers. I put them in F and C to be friendly to all :)

    F/C

75/23 in the shade today, (boise Idaho) outside temp

    Car Temps

132/56 when I started the car (already warmed up after driving home from work, engine off resting for 20ish minutes)

    89/32 +/- 2 when cruising at 40/64 (mph/kmh)

82/28 when on freeway going about 60/96 (mph/kmh)

113/45 at rest for five minutes, after a spirited drive (engine still running)

Think someone with a stock intake could take a quick look at where there temps set??? Also Okeydokey, never above 40 even after car off for 20ish minutes??

Just curious. I know this is nothing revolutionary. They intake sounds nice, and I was pleased with the aesthetic results. I have a spreadsheet that I have my gas mileage in. I figure if this negatively affects my mileage it's easily reversable. Why do anything really? Because it's a hobby I suppose. ;)

I think I have some logs around here, if not I can make more.

With a factory stock intake (down to the paper filter), I typically see around +15degF at cruise, around +5-7degF at 0psi, and around +20degF under full boost (~8-9psi) at med-high RPM. Only mod to the car is the cat-delete pipe.

I'll get some more logs in the next couple days to double check. However, it looks like your results aren't showing any huge improvements or detriments.

^^ is this proven to make an extra power over the stock paper filter? or do you only recommend it for the sake of cleaning and re-using?

It would be a tough one to test. You can't expect to gain a huge amount from something like this. However, the better breath-ability and the OEM Airbox design you can't go wrong. The OEM style filters are very restrictive.

Then add in the lifetime use it is a now brainer.

Definitely a better choice than a HAI
