Neuspeed Power Module: Risks vs Benefits

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I've read a lot about the Neuspeed module for our cars, and have heard a lot of good things about it, but I've also seen a lot of critics. I know that it isn't the perfect way of doing a plug-in, removeable tune, but that is ok with me.
I'm not crazy hungry for power, and I definitely do not want to do a full tune which runs a higher risk of getting a TD1.
There are a few things I am concerned about regarding the module:
    - How much extra load does it put on the turbo/ is there a significantly higher possibilty of failure?
    - After removal, should the car be driven for a certain number of miles to get the engine running normally again?

So, do the possible risks of installing the module outweigh the benefits of increased horsepower and torque?

The Neuspeed has 2 setting, one for 91+ octane that adds +5psi of boost and a 100+ octane setting that adds +7psi of boost.

ECU trims will adapt within 20 mile of driving, I assume this in not only after install but after uninstall as well.

I went through ModdedEuros for mine and have no complaints. In TX we have 93 octane gas so i feel very comfortable running it.

I am planning on running the PM until somebody like Cobb, SCT, or N Gauge supports a tuner for custom/pro tunes on this platform where data logging is possible and everything can be set up for your exact mods. I am not sold on the OTS tunes, but that's just me...

I've had it for a month or so, no complaints. It works, it's a nice increase. Especially with a heavy foot. I've brought my car in 3 times, the last I only drove 5 miles. before bringing it in, no td1. I cant justify a full tune like apr for 3 trips back and forth to get it put back to stock and the cost to do it.
The car feels no different driving around town driving conservative.
Also check out jb1 a little more $ same concept except you can adjust the boost levels which is nice option

We ran it on our S3 for maybe 28,000 miles or so and no issues

ModdedEuro's: Did you datalog the Power Module during your testing? Solid AFR's, fuel trims, timing? Did you log EGT's?

    Thanks

No did not log it. The module is raising boost and the stock ECU is adjusting based off of that. If you are looking for an optimized tune, I would flash the ECU with Unitronic and UniConnect which is what is on the car now

However if you are looking for an inexpensive option to get some extra power out of the car for a while piggybacks work well

I'm just trying to evaluate the piggyback as an option. The stock map can only compensate so far if you throw more boost at it. Just trying to understand if the added boost is running the car lean or running it outside safe parameters. Obviously, a flash is the ideal tuning method but we all know we run the risk of TD1 if we go that route. I love the idea of the added HP/TQ but only if reasonably safe. I've learned over the years that just because a tune feels ok, it doesn't mean it's not going to pop your engine.

You run a risk of TD1 with any option you go with. Piggyback or ECU flash backed to stock.

If you are really concerned about warranty issues I would wait to mod the S3 until outside the warranty to be honest

I'm going to a track day this weekend, so I got mine 1-day saver shipped, got it today.
Just installed it and I am very concerned because on my first test drive around the block I was not getting any boost readying on the gauge inside the cluster. Is his normal?
I also had the previously mentioned weird dsg behavior.

Are you sure everything is connected properly?

One thing to note for those running a OBDII gauge is the boost will not read higher due to this being a piggyback and OBDII data sent to things like a P3 VIDI gauge is from the ECU which is being bypassed with this setup

I will double check the connections, but I'm 99% sure I got a click from all of them.
Could it have thrown any permanent codes or messed anything up if incorrectly installed?

I had double checked all of the connections before driving, I'll take it for another drive before I investigate further.

Double check the connections. Also it will take about 20miles for it to adapt on the car or so

Boost readings came back during the second drive, and I started to notice a difference around 15 miles as it was adapting.
For the first 40-ish miles the DSG was acting weird, mainly between 1-2 and 2-3. Now that the car is behaving normally, and the ecu has adapted, there is definitely a difference. I would say that the difference is that the "kick" of the boost is more powerful. You don't feel anything in the low end, before boost comes into play, but once you're around 3500/4000 you notice a difference. As people have previously said, it pulls harder.

Overall I'd say it's a good purchase. Is it the best way to make your car go faster? No. But for the price, ease of use and ability to remove at any time, it is worth it.

Curious, what are the chances of a TD1 when running a piggyback? I am considering running a piggyback for awhile until my car gets a little older and then would switch to a full ECU tune.
