    [SWAP] DL501 S-tronic GEN1 to GEN2

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Guys,

Since my S-tronic in S4 2010 is going to break down soon (after driving few kilometers in traffic it starts to jerk, especially when stopping or letting of brake pedal, or switching from 1> 2nd gear) and complete rebuild is aprox same price as used S-tronic i'm thinking about SWAP from GEN1 to GEN2.

Anyone has ever done this? Is it possible and do-able or i'm asking for troubles?
I will have no problems with purchasing 2012 / 2013 S4 transmission but i need to know what is the exact part number for S-Tronic Gen 2. I cannot find it on ETKA online.
Is there anything else i need to purchase besides s-tronic unit ? any additional electronic components etc?
Do i need to purchase new gear know from newer S4 or my old one is still good?
S4 / S5 stronic units are the same?

    thanks
    mario

It's possible you can swap them in but the dealer would need to reprogram them. I think the APR flash works on all gens of the trans, so that leads me to believe the software is the same... That said I don't know if they actually upgraded anything within the trans.

If you find any info out let us know!

There is definitely differences in the hardware between generations. Gearing and clutch packs are beefier so they can clamp harder.

    From Arin @APR
"Now, there are some differences between the years that I should point out:

2010 & 2011 have lower gearing, and can't close the clutches as hard or as fast as the later cars. That leads to less ability to fast shift and launch control not being as aggressive as the later ones.
2012 has the low gearing of the 2010/11 cars, but has better hardware and can grab harder/faster. It fast shifts like the 2010/11, but the launch control grabs harder.
2013/2014 have higher gearing, and the best grab, giving them the best fast shift and the best launch control.

Yep. I stick to what Arin@APR said and i want GEN 2 S-tronic for good LC and bulletproof transmission.

Found some gearboxes, now i need to talk to my tune garage if they are happy with NHS or PWU s-tronic models.

Do you guys know, once i switch to new gearbox do i loose APR Stage 2 on my ECU since everything needs to be sync / programmed etc?

You'd be completely rolling the dice that your B8.0 Engine ECU and all the other modules (dash cluster, ABS, etc) that interact with the DSG would actually be ok with talking to a newer B8.5 Gen2 DSG trans.

I'd say that's highly likely (> 95%) to cause a problem and I would not attempt it unless you have time and $ to burn and just want to try it for your own reasons.

I hope i won't have any of those problems. Those guys are putting RS3 /TTRS s-tronic transmissions into manual A3/TT 3.2 and turbos making 600hp so i believe they know what they do. I hope :)

I had my 2011 DSG replaced under warranty recently, any idea which unit they would put in? Dealer was unable to explain in detail if and how the new unit differed from my original, other than it being "new"....

And in regards to the OP, if there are any specific details I can inquire about with my dealer regarding my replacement, I'd be happy to do so.

They put the same one back in. Now if their was a running change on anything internal in the 1st gen Stronic then whatever has been changed you got it most likely. They won't and CANNOT change you to the B8.5 Stronic. Thats ILLEGAL for the dealer to do. Thats due to emissions laws. Unless they got a wavier or tested it with the EPA.

Biggest thing would be the ECU tune. I would think if you can get APR or whomever to flash you software for 8.5 on both the ecu and the ecm. It should be good. I could be wrong and the ecu could be fine and just the tcu would have to be correct software. It all comes down to programming and how the tcu interacts with the ecm.

Better to trade in this car and get a newer one with GEN 2 stronic.
