Cool RENO's Engine Rebuild Thread (56k Warning)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Lately, as my PCV VTA has been spewing more and more oil and blowby into the air in the form of smoke, I decided that I needed to stop driving my car.

People are giving me dirty looks, my exhaust leaks are getting worse, my car is getting obnoxiously loud, and I have the mindset of, "fuck it, the engine is coming out soon anyway, so I'll fix it then".

Anyway, I've decided that to save myself from the poisoning that has been occurring every time I drive my car from my precat exhaust leaks, that I going to stop driving it.

Back in mid February, I decided to do a compression test because the car has been seeming to have less and less power before the turbo spools.

Wouldn't you know that my compression numbers are all well below the rebuild spec of 101 PSI dry. Squirting AT fluid into the combustion chamber after each test confirmed that my compression numbers are likely due to worn piston rings.

I decided that I'm going to use my spare block that I've been sitting on for over two years to finally go through with my stroker engine build.

I'm planning on a 92.8mm AEG crankshaft with 83mm 8.7:1 compression ratio (yes, lol) supertech pistons.

Rods were my first purchase, they have a confirmed wrist-pin size of 20mm (tested with an AEB wrist-pin from my spare block).

I'm both trying to get this project off the ground as soon as possible, and trying to save money wherever possible and still have a strong bottom end build.
Something might happen later with the top end and the turbo, but for this build I'm going to be sticking with the K04 setup and the ATW head I currently am using.

Today the car parked in it's final resting place for the next few months. Plates will be turned into the DMV on Saturday.

I'll inspect and replace as necessary. Clutch might get replaced while I'm in there but that would add at least another two weeks to my project.

Oh and I'm going to be switching to a 2.8 5 speed transmission that I already own.

King, having a rough time finding a clutch setup. Sorry again bro. I'll be thinking about you when I install the RA4 I got a sweet deal on though

OP, I'm kinda interested in what happened to the engine. Was it rebuilt at one point in time? Was this a failure of stock parts?

RENO's Engine Rebuild Thread (56k Warning)

Engine was supposedly from a car with 30k miles that was hit in the rear when I bought it at 116k miles. Now it has 216k. Tear down will begin soon, depending on if I buy a PTE 6262 or my Pistons next...
Pistons would probably be more responsible, but the 6262 is too good of a deal to pass up on...

Stock parts failure, yes. I will be disassembling the old engine for a few parts while building the new ones, planning on removing all pistons just to see exactly what happened.

How hard is it to remove the IM Shaft? I plan on removing it, balancing it, and changing the bearings. It's currently the only moving part on my block.

    Workstation: backyard.

Pulled the head right off the bat to check the cylinders (by the way ATW is polydrive for sure), while the cross hatching was still there and still looked decent, you could tell it was starting to take on a mirror like finish in some areas:

Gigantic oil leak either from valve cover or rear main seal, also clutch is pretty worn, going to be replacing.

Cylinder head looks as you would expect after an engine started consuming oil and I kept having to add oil instead of doing oil changes (yes I know but as you can see I don't really care anymore).

Engine bay needs love, also a power steering leak above the driver side axle needs addressing while the engine is out, new crush washers and retorquing

The next few are from Cylinder 4 which had the worst compression:

Was wondering why I kept blowing copper gaskets on my test pipe, took it out with the engine and checked it for flatness. You could see it wasn't flat and that all three bolt holes were raised compared to the spaces in between.

Moving onto the exhaust manifold, there were numerous hairline fractures, you could tell that one went all the way through from the inside to the top where the bolts go. Exhaust leak #2?

I found it hard to believe that I saw smoke coming from the bolt holes when I seafoamed my car once, I had no idea it was cracked so badly.

Beat it with a sledge hammer to accentuate the cracks and also because it's not going back on my fucking car.

Anyone know if these are supposed to be two pieces? Lol doesn't matter anyway, switching to my 2.8 transmission which uses the other style mount.

Nope, that is one piece, over time it cracks and splits like that. 2.8 mounts will do the same thing over time.

I think all those launches had something to do with the accelerated wear on those parts.

If you need any advice on clearancing for the crank, aka the the intermediate shaft and sides of the block just shoot me a message. Also the clearancing of the oil squirter for the piston skirt. Good luck with your build though! My stroker build taught me alot

Will do! Buying the Pistons soon, been having too much fun with a used engine. Stroker still in progress. Probably going to get Pistons that are clearanced for oil squirters already though.
