is costly realignment needed for new grille?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I want to put RS7 grille on and dealer says that it will need the $950 or whatever it is alignment for cameras etc.

Is this true? I have ACC and night vision.

Do you need this alignment if you don't have the night vision?

I have ACC and just removed my bumper to install an RS grille. I didn't need to do any sort of alignment and the ACC is functioning just as before. I'm not sure if the night vision makes a difference. 2012 A6.

can you ask them what exactly is this alignment ??

I mean, ask to talk to a tech(or anybody knowledgeable) ,so he can describe the job, maybe it's only running a simple adaptation on their computer.

    for 950$ or so ?

They said if they bumper or grille comes off, alignment is needed or ACC won't work. This is what the service advisor told me.

The way I understand this, based on a chat with a service advisor ....

1: If the ACC sensors are unplugged from the car, they need to be recalibrated, or the ACC wont work.
2: I have read posts where people remove the bumper, but slide it out just enough to do the grille swap, and leave the sensors plugged in, negating the need for the alignment.

Not sure about the NV..but suspect the same holds true. I have NV and plan the grille swap soon, so hopefully the readjustment isnt needed.

When I had the stage 2 tune done to my car the shop put the bumper in the service position to swap the SC pulley. AFIK they did not have to unplug anything from the bumper. My ACC functioned normally when all was back together.

The night vision is just a camera. There shouldn't be any alignment necessary. If it's not pointing down the road, reposition it.

The are saying this as their VAS system states it should be done.
Try it first and if the systems do not work, take it in and get them aligned.

If your removing the bumper to fit the new grill, there is no requirement to realign the ACC sensors. The sensors are fixed to the bumper and need to be unplugged to remove the bumper, but if refitted as before there doesn't appear to be any issue. [updated]

The Night Vision is simply a forward looking camera, there is no calibration for distances etc, and its not "mission critical" in the same way as the ACC sensors. No need for any calibration.

The same goes for the front parking camera. Not mission critical, just gives you a view of whats in front. There is a red "do not cross" line on the screen when your moving forward slowly, but I can't see that being any kind of a challenge to set up if you need to.

There is a good guide from Enigma1406 (for an S6 to RS6 grill conversion - the principles are almost identical to the S7 swap) http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...all-RS6-Grille

Im planning to do a 2016 S7 --> RS7 grill swap in the next month.

Maybe the dealership has to document their recommendation to cover their ass in case you get into an accident due to a non-adjusted ACC/NV. Just speculating.

When I removed my bumper (2012 A6 w/ ACC w/o Night Vision), the ACC radar sensors were mounted to the bumper (blue circle) connected at the top (yellow circle). I had to unplug 3 wires running to the ACC sensors (2 red circles + one more connection on the driver side). When I replaced my bumper, I forgot to connect the ACC radar on the driver side and my center console display greeted me with "ACC and Audi Braking Guard: Unavailable". I had the codes pulled and there was a communication error with the ACC units. The dealer said I needed to have the ACC radars realigned at the cost of $595. They wanted to know if I'd like to take the car home and remove the bumper (since I had already done it before) to see if everything was connected correctly, before charging me labor to do it themselves (great dealership in north Atlanta). I went home, removed the bumper, saw my silly mistake, plugged everything back up correctly, installed the bumper, and my ACC is working 100% with no need for an alignment.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads up Kagegann.

Ive not removed my S7 bumper yet - Im still gathering all the parts for the grill swap. Ive had the lower grill off on one side, and thought the ACC was mounted independent of the bumper. Now I know to watch out for the sensors!

    Cheers,
    J.

I have had my grill/bumper off numerous times. . I had ACC disconnected. The sensors come off with the bumper. Seems to work fine after plugging them back in.

I had to dremel front camera mount opening in new grill to mount camera front parking camera.

The only thing I notice is that the overhead graphic looks a bit weird where the front camera view joins the mirror camera view. Not enough of a discrepancy to spend big money to adjust in my opinion. My tech told me that he could just adjust that camera only and it would be much less than the full price of all the cameras/ACC and night vision align.

Same question to you...what grill are you going with?
I have a facelift S7. There are no aftermarket grills available for the facelift model, plus I have front view camera. Even on the pre-facelift models, Im not sure anyone has successfully integrated OEM cameras into a non-OEM grill.

My dealer wanted almost $2000 for the OEM RS7 grill, but I found a fleeBay dealer out of Europe who is selling bare bones OEM grills for the RS6&7 at a significant savings over dealer pricing (still not cheap though!) Ive had to order a couple of parts in order to mount my camera, but most of the parts are transferable from the original S7 camera mounting parts to the RS grill.

Im having the all black grill with the Quattro logo across the bottom

My grill is currently inbound to the UK via DHL. Here is a link to his eBay page:

I'm not sure what you mean??

Europrice are not offering an aftermarket grill, it's an OEM grill. That's also why it's over $2k, once you select the black optics with Quattro logo, plus the camera mounting.

Plus lm in Europe and would have to pay shipping and taxes on top.

Or am l missing the point of your post?

Have you tried resetting it with VAG? Maybe pulling your battery and doing a complete ECU reset?

Yes, but you replaced the whole bumper, which l assume included transferring the ACC units from the S6 bumper to the RS6 one, and in doing so completely lost the original alignment of the ACC units.

This thread is about changing the grill, but keeping the original bumper (so not moving the ACC sensors and changing the alignment)

What I've been told (because I don't own one personally) is that it's an RS7 grill that has been retrofitted to fit the S7. Same goes for the RS6 grill they have to fit the S6...and yes they're quite pricey.

    Pulled this from Europrice's page:

"Aggressive RS7 full mesh styling with black grille with aluminum surround, black optic with gloss black surround or the RS7 Performance grille with titanium surround. Available with or without lower quattro emblem. Bolt-on fitment for the A7 and S7. Grille comes without a plate holder. US and Euro license plate brackets are available, see below to add which would suit your needs best.

    Fitment: '15+ A7, S7, RS7 (All Models)
    Included: Grille - (x1), Surround - (x1), Rings - (x1)"

They don't mention the word "OEM" at all in their description. Regardless my whole point was if there was a grill out there to fit our facelifted S6/S7 vehicles that doesn't run in the thousand + dollar range. That's all.

Edit: And also a grill that supports night vision and our park sensors, Europrice is the only company out there that can do all of that, thus the heavy price tag. Good luck with your build!

Im pretty sure thats the OEM grille.

However, there are aftermarket grille's that support NV and parking cam for the Pre-facelift S7 and S6, not sure about post-facelift. There is an active thread on it, and I have one. ~$400 bucks.

All of the grilles on the site are genuine Audi parts, hence the higher pricing.

They also all work with the front camera, night vision and front parking systems without major hassle or custom fitment. If you have any or all of those functions the genuine Audi grilles make life much easier, but obviously more expensive.

Your link is for the PRE-Facelift version...I just found this one for the MY 16:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/291704503647...witem=&vxp=mtr

I asked the seller if this is truly for the 2016 S6 as their ad says A6/S6, does anyone know if the A6 and S6 have the same grill outlines?

I had the grill installed when I went to get the APR Stage 2 pulley installed and now my adaptive cruise control does not work and says "No sensor vision". I'm taking it back to the APR dealer this week to see if they can fix it. 😍

Here's the error code I received. He said he just unplugged it and plugged back in but now it looks like I have a gap where the ACC "bulb" is. Can anyone confirm that it's suppose to be flush?

Not sure about the gap, but as I mentioned, the dealership told me if the sensors are unplugged, they likely need recalibrated
