Stereo volume raises and lowers erratically

I have an '07 A4 Quattro with Bose speakers and the volume goes up and down randomly for no reason. It's really annoying. It did this with the stock RNSE unit as well as with my new Pioneer 7100NEX. The stereo guys have no idea what it's about. Any thoughts?

i believe its a feature called (GALA/DSP)

This is something to do with BOSE. If you have BOSE it uses something called AudioPilot that changes the volume and tone depending on speed or interior noise. If you don't have Bose the speed dependent volume is called GALA, but shown on the RNS-E as DSP. GALA/DSP is disabled by setting it to zero from the menu.

That's because IT IS erratic lol. Constant up and down for no damn reason. And how would I disable it in "the menu"? It has an aftermarket stereo now.

On my car I believe it's called VSC , it's basically when the faster you speed the louder it gets and the when you slow down its gets lower . I turned that feature off a few weeks back. On your aftermarket radio it should be in the settings . If you look in the manual it might be noted .

FYI, even non Bose Symphony II+ have this feature. Enabled by default, but you can quickly disable it on the headunit (via menu).

Right so wouldn't it become disabled or go away all together once you take out the headunit and put in a Pioneer one?

Not if the pioneer one has that feature as well. Look at your manual and see if it has that feature and if it does, disable it. If it does not have that feature and the volume is still erratic, then you definitely have a different issue going on. Probably wiring or faulty head unit.

There was a TSB to disable Audiopilot..... I copied the text, so here you go:

Condition:

Customer perceived condition of radio volume changing by itself may be caused by the noise compensation function Audiopilot”, which is part of the BOSE amplifier. Some customers may find this function to be too aggressive and for some individuals a
noticeable volume fluctuation can be heard.

Note:
Audiopilot can not be selected in the radio menu. The selectable radio function “SVC“ is a vehicle speed controlled volume adjustment and operates independently from the Audiopilot.

Note:
This condition is not related to in-car microphone. Do not muffle or disconnect microphone.


Overview

There are two different Service Procedures incorporated into this Technical Bulletin.
 Audiopilot Deactivation
 Enabling Speed Volume Control (SVC), if necessary.


Audiopilot Deactivation

The BOSE amplifier Audiopilot function can not be disabled in the radio menu. The wiring harness electrical connector must be
modified.
– If necessary, remove ignition key from ignition lock cylinder.
– Remove necessary trim. See appropriate Repair Manual, Body Interior, Repair Group 70.
– Disconnect amplifier electrical connector.
– Remove tie strap and electrical connector cover
– Remove insulating tape on harness to expose additional wiring.
– Locate white wire in cavity 6 on harness
– Cut white wire Make sure there is enough wire on both sides of cut to install a butt connector.
– Strip insulation on both wire ends 6-7 mm (approx. 1//4 inch).
– Install blue butt connector onto harness side of white wire.
- Crimp butt connector using appropriate crimping tool
– Push locking tabs outward and slide SMALLER inner hardshell out of outer hardshell
- Release inner hardshell wire lock by rotating outward.
Note: Release lock on Pin 24/25 side of connector.
– Insert terminal of repair wire Part No. 000 979 025A into cavity 24 of amplifier connector.
– Assemble inner and outer hardshells.
– Route repair wire to open side of butt connector -black arrow- and cut repair wire to length.
– Insert connector side of white wire into open side of butt connector
 Crimp butt connector using appropriate crimping tool
– Re-tape exposed wiring and reassembly amplifier electrical connector.
– Connect amplifier electrical connector.

OP, may be put the old HU in and disable, then reinstall your new HU.

I have this feature on my 25 year-old Alpine 7525 deck which I still owned to this day. Didn't know they still use it.

The wiring mod in the TSB still applies since the Bose amp is what has the circuitry built in, and th mic connects to it. Doesn't matter what deck is installed.

Thankyou for getting me on the right track. Most of all that instructional info flew right over my head but I will show it to my audio installer.

If I remove/bypass the BOSE amp then problem solved?

Coles notes to bypass audio pilot:
Disconnect plug from Bose amp
Insert the repair wire Part No. 000 979 025A into cavity 24 of amp plug
Connect it to white wire that's in pin 6

Done.

Running the speakers off the deck vs the Bose amp will disable the factory sub and dash speaker. So I wouldn't do it.
