Grinding noise on cold start

Anyone else dealt with a grinding noise when turning on your car from a cold start? Probably there just for a second or so, much more noticeable from outside or windows down, and only when turning on the car after sitting overnight. I mentioned this to the dealer last time I was in for maintenance and they couldn't duplicate it.... but planning to bring it back up when I get my next oil change.

Yes, if you mean immediately after it starts, I believe I know what you are describing. Mine does it as well, but I don't think every time...

Could just be the starter sticking - not uncommon in cold weather (not sure if this would be an issue with Audi but was very common in Hondas I dealt with)

does it sound like a rattle from the back of engine, and it only happens on completely cold starts? If so it might be your chain tensioners. There is a tsb for it, but it only applies if you hear the noise for more than 1 second. I took mine in to have it checked and they confirmed mine was normal. The noise should only last between a second or less.

Also, if you hear a rattle from your exhaust when holding the rpms right around 1000-1100 then you could also be getting an rattle from bad resonators in the mid-pipe. I recently had both mid-pipes replaced because of this.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah it only happens on the first start of the day, hoping that it's just normal operation.


But I did check out the link for the TSB UberBrute posted and the sound is just like in that video. Except that on the TSB it says that the sound must happen after the first start of the day. Well, I'll bring it up to the SA... can't hurt. Thanks again all.

Oh mine doesn't sound like the video. And the noise starts about a second after the engine starts, not immediately upon start.
I have a '16, so I hope I have the latest revisions of everything...

There is a TSB for the cam tensioners. It's a superficial noise and not one to worry about (so says the TSB) but they have developed new ones to overcome.

Mine sounds like a maraca if its too cold out for a brief second after startup. I figured it was the 0w-40 not doing its job during below freezing temps.

It's the cam chain tensioners 100%. Like already stated. The bulletin says no harm will be done, but they have developed new ones to address the issue.
