    Summer tires

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys! Been doing some research and I can't seem to find the perfect summer tire for my needs.

I want one that obviously gives me great performance, but being its my daily driver and I am out east on Long Island a few times a week I need one that gives me great tread wear rating.

    Thanks

For a good blend of wear and performance it's hard to beat super sports. Continentals aren't bad either. For more performance the Michelin sport cup 2's are really good, but wear isn't fantastic.

Michelin PSS are where it's at from what I've read and the people I've talked to that have them. The problem right now is finding them, they are on backorder everywhere and have been for a while.

Damn. I checked Costco, Tire Rack, and Wheel Specialist Inc and none of them had them and said they didn't know when they'd be available. I'll have to keep checking around to see if anybody else local has any. I'm spoiled by having a Tire Rack distribution center about 45 minutes away so it's hard for me to go anywhere else since they are usually so much cheaper. Thanks for the heads up.

PSS is the #1 choice for your needs but also check out Hankook V12s. I ran those and had no issues with them.

You guys don't have weather cracking on these pilots? I have cracking on all of mine and they wont' warranty it as it is not bad enough. Looks horrible.

This tire is not inflated due a recent suspension malfunction mixed with a very long road trip.

Both fronts are shot but the cracking is on all of them.

I escalated this with Tirerack and Michelin and they both said no. Tirerack offered me 10% off a new set of 4. gee thanks. they were a year old with 7k miles. Michelin had a weather cracking picture guide and it had to be basically leaking air for them to say it was bad enough to cover. These were 2 out of like 8 of the guide in severity.

I am done with both of them.

    Summer tires

Just got sumitomo htr z iii with my new 20 inch rims. I felt they are even more comfortable than my PSSs with my 19 stock peelers. Definitely recommend them. I saw a lot of people running hankook ventus v12s and based on tirerack's review sumitomo is overall better, that was why I got them. They are definitely worth the price. Of course, they will never have the traction of PSSs but I don't push them to the limit often anyway.

If you could find how wide your rims are, you can search how a stretched 255 on your rims will look like. If you don't like how it looks, you could probably go for hankook ventus v12s in 265 or 275, a lot of people in this forum are using them right now. If 265 is your stock tire size, I bet 255 will not make a noticeable difference in the looks.

I just found out that your wheels are 20x9. I run 255/35/r19 on my stock 19x9 rims and 255/30/r21 on my 20x9 BBS rims.

$340 vs 200 for the Hankooks are you giving up anything? that is a big price difference. Did you see my rip tire thread. If you gotta replace them due to being lowered and camber issues why spend more? would a 275 be in danger of hitting anything or does it bubble out of the rim a bit?

Not way they'd not take care of that. That looks terrible. You use Armor All by chance? I had my PSS for for 5 years, and here they are when I sold the car....

I spent like 2 months of my life trying to get them warrantied. I went to 3 car shops and they told me they have to "eat it" if michelin says its not bad enough per the chart when they get the tires shipped to them. The guy was straight up honest. The warranty picture one looked a junkyard tire and had no water near it for 10 years. I sent pics to michelin and tirerack. TR actually offered 20% but that still sucks when I just spent 1400. Yours look nice. I would buy them again if I was sure I would not get the same crap.

might have used armor all. Does that cause that? what should you use?

Mine looked an felt the same as day one, no shit. Armor only dries out rubber. Use this...

That 16oz bottle will dress a 30 series tire bi-weekly for over a year. I got up to two. Take very little. Pays for itself for sure. And does not sling, or yellow/dry the tires.

thanks for the info. Will try it for sure. Just got to get some tires to try it on first.

Any reason not to go up to a 275/30/20 from a 265 if I stick with the pss? the 275's are cheaper than the 265's by $40 a tire.

    Summer tires

Thanks for that heads up Mops. I should have fresh new tires on soon with new wheels and want to make sure I dress them properly from the moment I put them on the car. It's a HUGE pet peeve of mine that I dress the tires when I'm done washing it, it's simply not complete otherwise!

For a while now I've been using Meguair's tire gel that works pretty damn good and lasts long. Doesn't seem to rot the the tires and they look dressed still a week or so later. I can't wait to try that Adams stuff :) This is what I have been using all this year, used it as a kid on all my 5.0 Mustangs when I was 18. But I'll gladly try something new.

Performance wise sumitomo or hankook is not comparable to PSS. The aspect I give up the most is wet grip and possibly cornering (due to softer sidewall). However, consider the price difference and I'm living in SoCal where seldom gets wet I eventually made my choice.

Depending on your wheel width, 275 could make your tire look more 'square' than 'rounded', (I don't know if my word makes sense but it's just the appearance), if your wheels are narrower than 9 inches, it's possible that the tire will bubble out of the rim a bit, some people actually like that since it protects the edge of the rim. (I don't think rs4 rims will be narrower than 9 inches anyway)

If your wheels are really 9 inches wide I really recommend going for 255 coz 255 tires are more common than 265 so cheaper, not to mention you have more options.

On OEM EU 20x9 ET26 RS4 style wheels?
    The receipt says et29 8T0601025L

I am in south FL and do a lot of I95 driving up and down the east coast. I have a set of winter wheels that don't seem to ever go on the car. not much snow recently where I go.

I have issues with my camber I think as these tires also got shredded on the inside. I posted another post with pics. it has 230 views but nobody posted any ideas how to fix it. I am guessing i have to raise up the car a bit and then re adjust the adjustable arms?

Where did you get the 20% TR code? If you don't mind me asking. I'm currently pricing some tires out and different models before I order my wheels.

Its not an advertised discount. it was because of the cracking in the picture higher up. I am replacing them under 2 years with low miles.

    HUGE difference!

I don't know if this helps, but I have Continental ExtremeContacts for the summer — came on the car.

And Blizzaks for the winter. LOVE the Blizzaks!

The Contis are hard to say if they're good or bad because mine are getting worn (one is cupping) and aren't riding the best anymore. I'll be looking to replace my summer tires too in a year. So I'm curious what everyone likes for a summer tire.

It works good right!? I never once thought man id like something better. Really shines the hell out of them and it lasts. Applied right with a pad it doesn't fling or turn my tires brown, because it lasts all the way until next wash! But I'm down to try that Adams stuff.
