Trany or Clutch on its way out? (Difficult gear selection)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Morning Guys,

So I have always had the slight problem of intermittent difficulty to get the car into 1st, lifting the clutch and pressing it down again then made it easy, this only happened once every couple of weeks.

Yesterday driving home in traffic, about half way home when pulling away it was extremely difficult to get the car into gear, I had to use quite a bit of force, it was the same for all the gears (It may have been easier the higher the gear but not much). Also when pulling away in first it felt like there was a bit of a jerkiness to the car. It was difficult to change into any gear weather the car was moving at any speed or standing still.

I stopped somewhere to pick something up and when I got back into the car gear selection was then back to how it was, simple and smooth, no more wobble.

I assume this is a sign of something which is going to break soon?

    Any advise would be appreciated.

    Regards,

EDIT 1: forgot to mention, I did not try and select gears when the car was off
EDIT 2: With only first it felt like it first crunched to a first position, then with some more force crunched to the final position
EDIT 3: I also think I smelt clutch when I got home

When it's hard to put into 1st, try to go 2nd then into 1st. If that is no issue: this means the 1st gear synchros is wearing. My buddy's 05.5 is pretty bad and I've just gotten used to going 2nd into 1st to try to prevent this a bit.

If you feel that on all gears then I don't have any experience with that

Ditto on my 05.5. No experience with issues in all gears though.

I dont even know how these synchros work to know it it could affect all gears like this, car has been shifting fine since, I am worried that something is going to leave me stranded though, especially with a newborn baby.

Is there any way to investigate a clutch without actually opening it up, probably not.

WHen was the last time you changed the fluid?

JHM has a video on shifter alignment. For a while, mine wouldn't go into 1st as easy as it should but then realized that I misaligned the shifter when I installed the JHM SSK.

I have never changed the fluid, owned the car for 2 years now, perhaps I should give that a go, also I will try and find the JHM video, thanks for the idea

UPDATE: So last night while leaving the office, I started my car and again, could not get into gear (was very difficult, I didn't push it all the way in ((Thats what he said)). I switched the car off, could get it into gear fine, switched it back on and it was perfect again. Drove home with no issues

This morning, switch car on, same, cant get it into gear, switch the car off and on again, this time I still cannot get it into gear, I switch it off, put it in reverse and then start the car (with it in reverse) and while starting the car started creeping against the handbrake.

Switched it off and on again and then it was fine and has been fine since (3 trips).

Could this be the clutch? Pressure plate?
